When did Paypal become the only option for paying?

I have a credit-card connected to Itch, and I have been able to pay for games on this site in the past without a problem.

The last time I tried to pay for something, however, I had to do it through paypal, which I hate. Have anyone else experienced this frustrating change? The last time I was able to pay directly, was before the witch-hunt for NSFW-content begun, so could that be the reason?

Itch hasn't removed Stripe as a payment method, so you should be able to use it if it's a game that charges for Itch.

The problem is that Itch has a mode (chosen by the person selling the game) called "direct to you," where the game developer is responsible for charging for the game. In this mode, the developer can choose whether they want PayPal only or Stripe as well.

Most likely, you won't be able to buy that game through Stripe because of the game's creator's decision, not because Itch is removing card payments.

It could have been a personal decision by the game developer(s).

But I wouldn’t be surprised if itch.io is remmoving Stripe payment options from projects that are marked as sensitive.

Stripe is much more restrictive than PayPal on what creatives are allowed to use its services. Itch has been changing feature access at an “abundance of caution” level this year.

So it seems like your guess about stripe is correct.

I have also heard about Itch being forced to be more restrictive with developers of NSFW content. Al it does is just making things harder for indie developers, as far as I can tell

Thank you both for your replies.
I contacted the developer about it, and this is their reply:

"Thanks for your comment!

Unfortunately, itch.io currently only allows PayPal payments for adult-rated titles. If PayPal doesn’t work for you, you can also find the same game on BOOTH:"
