Gaming Controller on Linux Recommendations

I shall point out; that i have already investigated this topic on other sites, however; the issue comes solely from itch games. (which i think is an issue with the controller makers or something.)

anyways, i use linux; i have a controller; (EasySMX X10) it worked out for a few months but the dongle started randomly disconnecting; and suddenly the past few days it's become so frequent; i have began to investigate for a more long lasting controller.

The current issue with using the wired function is the right joystick is off kilter and i have no means of changing it like i do with dolphin emulator. and the key mapping is just haywire as well...

Ideallly,  i DON'T want a bluetooth controller and preferably either a wired plug and play controller with out much or any set up. (remapping the keys, or installing an app... most of them are not developed for linux and i don't have a smartphone.)

I am currently uncertain on many of the controllers... i am looking at a PS4 controller; though i have no idea on whether or not i could just use the wire instead of bluetooth. Please don't suggest i just use bluetooth...

Well, Microsoft sometimes sells their XBox controllers in a package with a USB-c cable included, where the package is intended for PC.

Compared to the controller without the cable… it’s usually not much more to get it with the cable included.

would it work out of the box on linux? or do i have to install something to get it to work?

which model of controller?

Out of the box? I think the XBox One version of the XBox controller might. Though with the Series X version, it’s newer, and your mileage may vary.

As for the model… it’s hard to say, because these packs seem to change a lot. They aren’t super common, but occasionally you might see one in a store here and there, or listed on a store’s website during a sale. I think they’re often called “XBox controller + USB-c cable” (or such).

I think most would include the XBox One version of the controller, but generally, I’d still check… as the controller included could be 360, XBox One, or possibly even Series X - depending on the specific item.

"Logitech F310": cheap and good, USB. 100% compatible with Linux (tested with Ubuntu 24.04), compatible with Xinput and D-input. Its weak point, I would say, is the D-pad.

"8Bitdo 2 Pro" (They have both BT and USB versions.) it will be recognized as a generic gamepad, but it works perfectly without needing any additional software installation.

i may like the 8bitdo 2 pro... it  looks similar to the PS1 controller after they added the joysticks.

The 8bitdo SN30 Pro also has a gyroscope and an accelerometer, but getting it to work is a pain in the ass (it works only in Switch mode and only on the first pairing, so you need to re-pair every time you pull it out).
