First impressions, some feedback

All in all I really like where this game is going! Just thought I'd provide some feedback from my first impressions of the game. Most of this is kind of mundane usability and bug stuff but hey sometimes it's hard to notice these things when you're close to the project so I figured I'd list them out.

  • All food seems to say it's fish in the tooltip haha.
  • You can’t leave character creation screen once you’re in it. Not with the escape key or anything I've found. Moreover it deletes your existing character when you click "New Game," meaning if you were thinking of re-rolling then having second thoughts, you're out of luck.
  • I haven't gotten very far but it seems that everyone wants to kill me? Are there NPCs you talk to at all or is this not that kind of game. If you’re just on a soul stealing rampage that's cool. It may be fun to play that up a little more.
  • Speaking of stealing souls, I've gotta say that sound when you gobble up an enemy's soul after killing it is quite satisfying :P
  • As for colorblind stuff (from my other thread), the stamina and hunger bars are indistinguishable for me as well, though that’s not a big deal because they’re in specific positions.
  • Love the spell effects!! Also love the faux 3d and how like the trees pop out of the game world.
  • More features to facilitate keyboard-centric play would be nice, eg targeting, equipping things, picking things up. Definitely not a dealbreaker by any means though.
  • Can you skin and butcher an animal both? Seems kind of wasteful thematically to only be able to do one but I could understand this from a balance perspective.
  • Haven’t figured out a consistent way to reproduce this state but occasionally the map just stops updating itself. A restart of the game fixes this.
  • It would be a nice convenience to have a way to use tools without having to equip them. Or maybe have the game auto-equip them if you want the tradeoff of having something in your hands that’s not your weapon when nasties come to say hi.
  • I wouldn't really care for it myself (I play a lot of traditional roguelikes), but an eventual option to disable permadeath somehow might be a good move for accessibility.

Thanks for opening up the game! Looking forward to future developments.

  • Which food? I've made a quick check and meat from rabbits, say: "Some fresh meat, a good source of nutrition." Mushroom seems to have proper descriptions too, but I might have missed something.
  • That's a good point, I've added this to the list. Before the alpha, I've made some preparations to add multiple save games later, so I definitely want to add it at some point.
  • There are no friendlies and no plans for them currently, maybe after v0.5 when building stuff will be available something will happen in that regard, but the main gameplay is combat oriented and the end goal is destruction of the world. There were plans to add lore through NPCs shouting/talking during fights, but this has been pushed for later. There may be some cool ideas that could fit the game, like setting up cult that will worship you in hopes they will be spared, but it would be a side stuff to add when the core of the game is amazing. ;)
  • I'm glad you like the soul stealing sound, there are more combat improvements planned in v0.3 to make it feel even more satisfying. :)
  • I've added the bars to the list too.
  • Took some time to have it look that way and there are many cool abilities, so I'm glad you like them :)
  • I've had the request for the ability to play without mouse before, I have some of it on the list. Not sure when I'll be able to tackle it, but it's on the list. ;)
  • The skinning and butchering were done this way on purpose, to present a choice. Corpses are a limited resource in the game. ;)
  • Do you mean the world map doesn't update and remain black, or some parts of it disappear?
  • This feature has been requested, and it will come in one of the minor patches before v0.3.
  • I'll see how many people would be interested in such an option, lack of permadeath would need some additional features to be implemented and balanced to work.

Thanks for taking the time to give so much feedback!

Good Wizards of the code told you it said fish before hehe ;) I guess this is an odd glitch !

  • For the fish thing: note where it says "Fish" in the left middle of the tooltip in the picture above. Mushrooms do it too on my game. If it matters I'm using the full version now cause your responses were really promising and I couldn't hold back, enemy vision status be damned :P
  • As for the map bug, yeah I mean the fog of war doesn't get lifted as you move through the map. It just stays black. That is until you restart the game. I also got consistent repro steps:
    • Start the game, create a new character.
    • Exit to the menu
    • Start a new character again (don't restart the application), move around, watch the map not fill in.

Oh, the item type is fish :D

Ok, I'll get it resolved in the next minor patch, thanks for the screenshot and the map bug reproduction steps!

Map bug and item type food should be resolved in v0.2.1.5

Nice!
