What's your experience on priced games solely put on itch?

As far as I know, putting priced games ONLY on itch is a bad decision because literally anyone can post games on itch therefore not filtering out the poorly-made rushed games.

But I want to see how bad it is to actually do this, because the other options of doing so are to publish on steam which could be risky to some because of the 100$ one time fee.

If it's alright for the developer, a revenue and how long it has been published comparison would be very appreciated <3

You are confusing marketing with distribution.

Itch is a store and distribution platform, but due to its high number of creators, the visibility of a game is very, very small.
It's been said many times, Itch is not going to promote your game. If you want to sell, you must have your own marketing plan.

Uploading a paid game to Itch without any additional promotion on your side is almost certainly a disaster.

Uploading a paid game to Steam without any additional promotion on your side is almost certainly a disaster too.

We're planning to do both of these but... not til next year. Sadly I can't give you future stats XD

I'd say it's not a bad thing to put out a paid game on itch, because you don't lose anything other than potential views of people who'd only play for free. And having a demo on your page fixes that problem altogether.

However, if a dev doesn't think they'll get their $100 back from Steam, I'd be surprised if their game would sell more than a few copies here either. Exceptions might be very niche games with a small but dedicated audience (some visual novels, or asset packs maybe).

I've just realised @hechelion and I have both read your question in an entirely different way, so I apologise if this answer isn't what you wanted!

$12.46 since 2016 for Petal Puzzler. And that's more than any of my other PC games have made on itch.io.
