Game demo and pricing

Hi, what is the common practice when releasing a demo in itch.io?

So my game is currently available only in demo.

Now my question is, how should I set the pricing? If I set it as free, then the files can't be marked as demo. Currently I have it set up as paid, but without a full game download. Is this okay? And will it appear in free category search (since you can't purchase the game yet)?

Or should I just make it free and then create a new page once the game is done/released?

Also, I have noticed that the game shows the price in some parts of itch.io, and showing as free in others. Is this normal?

Thanks.

I think most people have a "free" page for their demo until they can apply a price to the page. You're welcome to have different pages but you might lose some of the popularity that your demo page has.

This sounds like a bug, do you remember what places there was inconsistency.

Hi, thanks for responding.

I have a follow up question, then. If I set my game as free now, what would happen when I change it to paid? Would people who downloaded the free version will be able to access the paid version? (because they already own the game before it has price?)

Regarding the bug, I believe it showed the price in the homepage (itch.io) and listed as free in any other pages (free games, tags, etc). I have since set my demo as free though, so I'm not entirely sure anymore.

I wrote a thing about converting free to paid here: https://itch.io/t/41926/who-can-download-my-game-when-i-convert-it-from-free-to-.... Tell me if you still have questions.

Thanks for the info about the bug.

That clears everything up! Thanks for the help, really appreciate it!
