Is it possible to have a public devlog without publishing a project as public?

Hey ya'll!

As the title says, is it possible to make a publicly accessible devlog here on itch without setting the project to "public" access? I was thinking of making a devlog that starts from the very first steps of development all the way to release but I'm a little confused as to how to go about it given the three project access levels?

Would the best option be to make a new topic on Community » Game Development » Devlogs ? If so, what is the point of having a devlog tab on the project itself?

..So you can also have a devlog after you publish the project?! Both have their uses. And people follow devlogs on the forum, they always worked well for me.

Ah I see~, so the forums are what I was looking for after all. And then the devlog on the project page is for continuous post-release updates like bug fixes and what not. That makes sense, don't know why it didn't click at first, but thank you for the reply!

The devlog subforum is basically deprecated, except for some special cases. Also, you will not be visible in https://itch.io/devlogs

You can publish an unfinished project. Or at least make it accessible. While I do not know if this is a requirement to have devlogs that you upload any files or have any special accessibilty options. I seen project pages without any files or placeholders. But I would imagine since a devlog contains the link to the project that it might not work, if the project is restricted such that only the creator can view it. If it is merely restricted as in, not indexed, that would not be a problem, but it might also not put the devlogs into https://itch.io/devlogs .

If you create a private page and post devlogs on it, those posts will not be publicly available. Your other option is to create an empty project page and then start publishing devlogs there. Note that empty project pages on itch.io don’t gain any visibility in our discovery systems, so you would only collect viewers through your followers, visitors to your profile page, and places where you shared a direct link to the page.

Another approach I recommend is using the Posts feature available on your dashboard. You can access this here: https://itch.io/dashboard/posts. You can write posts directly to your account without the need for a project page.

Once your page is up, you can use the “Convert to Devlog” button located at the top of the post’s edit page to reassign that post to another project page on your account.

Hope that helps
