How do I configure NSFW to not appear on Itch.io pages?

Itch.io is being flooded with pornography, it is offensive to children. There are heavy, disgusting and appealing things, it's cheap pornography disguised as something artistic, it's very appealing. Anyway, this shouldn't be shown to children, which is a large audience here. I shouldn't have to try hard not to see this, it should be standard that it doesn't appear. It seems like this rubbish has only increased, I'm wondering what the future will be when anyone online anywhere will have pornography right in front of every child's face. It's the end.

Generally you should only see content marked as NSFW if you:

  1. directly seek it out. For example, you type in the name of an NSFW category
  2. enable NSFW browsing from your account settings (it is disabled by default, but will activate if you upload an NSFW piece of content on your account). You can double check your setting here: https://itch.io/user/settings

We have strict requirements on classification and filtering, so if something is showing up in place where it shouldn’t be then it should be reported to us.

Can you please share where you came across the content you’re concerned about?

Thank you, my profile was actually marked to allow this content. I'm a little more relieved that by default this box is unchecked. Thanks.

I DIDN'T EVEN POST ANY NSFW GAMES AND IT STILL SHOWS UP. This platform is so shitty tbh

This content may contain content you must be 18+ to view. Are you 18 years of age or older?

How can I make it show this warning again after I checked the box for my acc?

It would also be cool if NSFW projects wouldn't be displayed on publisher's profile, if you have this kind of content disabled in your preferences.

It happened to me couple of times when I was browsing itch.io in public, and when I clicked on a profile of a person - I got blasted with porn thumbnails

Of the 840k games on itch only 0.2% are nsfw. Itch is not flooded with nsfw games, it is flooded with games.

And same with google, you need to change options to see the nsfw stuff on itch. As you obviously did. The relevant options is named "(x) Show content marked as adult in search & browse" on the front page of your settings/profile.

You actually should be flooded with horror games on browse. Those are not appropriate for children either, so I shall claim, that children are in fact not the target audience of itch.

That being said, there are regular attempts of bad agents to upload malware and stolen games. Those are typically nsfw. If you see nsfw despite having it turned off and not seeking it out specifically,  it might be one of those.

I DID NOT EVEN UPLOAD NSFW ON THIS SITE

SAME

Well this is a suggestion to itch. Please when you are looking for games when you hover over one, make sure it says: This content is for audiences 18 years of older. Same as when you click on one. I GOT A NFSW GAME WHEN I HAVE THE BOX UNCHECKED!

If you see a NSFW game when you don't have that box checked or aren't searching for those games, the problem is that the developer hasn't marked their game as NSFW. What you should do is report it to staff or notify the developer.

No matter how many automatic warnings are created, if a developer doesn't indicate that their game contains NSFW content, it's impossible for a script to provide that information.

EDIT:
I forgot, but the warnings you suggest already exist.

Happy now?

i didn't even post any nsfw content and it still shows up for no reason

Please read the answers in this thread.

OP had that setting active and forgot that it was active.

If the setting is not active in your account and you see nsfw games that will have one of those reasons:

You are browsing an adult tag and confirmed that your are 18+. There is a box now that asks for confirmation. An example for an adult tag is "adult".

The games you see are not properly marked as nsfw or you only think they are nsfw, but are not.

You do have the setting for adult content active, but think it is turned off.  It is on the first page you see when going to settings and reads

Content — How content on itch.io is shown to you

  • Show content marked as adult in search & browse

I have that setting off and just visited https://itch.io/games and https://itch.io/games/newest and scrolled some ten pages.

There were the occassional games about dating or romance, but no obvious nsfw content.

i didn't turn it on. the problem was fixed tho but i deleted every single one of my game sadly

Soooo, your first statement was incorrect on both claims ;-)

To recap the issue for anyone finding this place by having a similar problem:

If you upload a game and click the box that the game has senitive content and is not suited for the workplace or minors, your account will have that "nsfw" setting activated and it cannot be deactivated.

As far as I understand it, this is done to prevent people running to support by asking why they can't see their own game.

But it spawns a different support issue by people not being able to unselect the option and being confronted with adult only content, just beause they uploaded some horror game they deemed unsuited for minors.

A suggested solution in my opinion would be, to show a disclaimer/reminder popup every time a nsfw game is uploaded or updated, while the setting is switched off. It is not user friendly to block that option. A cleaner solution would be to differentiate between user and publisher accounts, but Itch is not designed to have that distinction.

If you did not upload adults only content, your games probably would have been fine by unselecting the sensitive content option.

Most horror games are not considered "nsfw", even if they would be 18+ in some countries for violence. Assuming you did mark your games as having "sensitive" content for such a reason.

Yes you did

I may quote myself...to heaten the funny nsfw debate :P

there are also butler versions with gui....multiple ones.....its a well hidden secret but i was invited to the club of dead poets by a good developer friend, who is literllay a developer-knewledge "jungbrunnen" he helped multiple times with honest feedback and hidden insights. he wrote a whole space simulator in blitz (?) engine, its shocking :D -->  beyond.frontiers by Duality Beyond Studios (support him, he is one of the few indie-develoeprs,  who has pulled it through all by himself, while suffering  form authism, he may truely dserver your support (not looking at the obscene digital-pimp scene also known as nsfw true artist with love for your very money, in fastest possible way :P (i dont mean all nsfw creators, but as of the latest happenings, these knuckleheads crawling out of their holes and rage about their steady money income suddenly vanished :P much luck rebelling but these laws are set by the individual states of europe and most certainly in the us and other places too and what do careful owners of the last true indie holding grounds, that is available to yall for free, but you keep coming. when will you get it that most certainly  itch had to do this because they also have bills to pay and im sure they wouldnt be happy at law suit rolling over. these  laws have been  stated and already been approved by multiple high ranking politicans of countries that have something to say obviously.....its even darker then nsfw dissapearing if you would really dive to the reason hidden in plain sight.
