I'm trying something new as of this week.

Ever came across a game album? It's like a music album, except made up of several short games instead. Usually inspired by music, it seems, but they don't have to be; the same principle applies regardless.

So allow me to present Robots in Spring, a collection of whimsical little games with some common themes:

  • strictly turn-based gameplay, because reasons;
  • preferably mouse controls, also because reasons;
  • minimal vector graphics and no sound;
  • lighthearted puzzle-ish gameplay;
  • designed with an eye towards retro platforms.

As of this writing, the first one is complete and playable (it's even about robots!) and a second title is lined up. They won't get much polish -- the whole point is to have some fun and move on before burnout sets in, because I've had plenty of that lately. And frankly, simplicity is underrated nowadays, when even indie productions try to be as big and sophisticated as possible.

So much for plans. This second post was supposed to announce another completed game. Development went quite well, too, about as quickly as first time, but the gameplay just wouldn't work. Rather than dwell on it, I'm going to set this one aside for now and move on to the third game. It's just two days of work after all, and the code isn't going anywhere. Stay tuned.

Hello, everyone! The third game in the series went a lot better, and quicker too. Being able to reuse half the graphics probably helped, as well as the lack of moving pieces:

As this is my first time actually making a strategy game (unused design documents don't count), gameplay is far from perfect. But it's fun enough. And to make a good day even better, I have an idea for fixing game #2 above. So that's next. See you in a few days.

Hello, everyone! I failed to update the completion percent last time for failing to realize you're supposed to edit the OP for that. Moreover, I spent the weekend working on something else entirely, so this will now be late:

Yep, I've picked up the second game again, and went back to my initial idea of making a board game. This will make the logic rather more complicated even with no AI, but it will be worth the trouble. Doubly so as once I have three games I can actually make a project page and move the devlog there.

This decision also establishes a new trend: each game so far is in a different genre, all of them relatively new to me. Which is cool, and suggests what to work on next. Don't change the channel!

Hey, folks. I worked more slowly this week, but still managed to complete the game as expected. To my surprise, it's small than the other two. Also not well balanced, though I've taken steps to compensate. But hey, these weren't supposed to be perfect. Just fun.

More importantly, I can now make a project page, which will be a nice change of pace. Can't wait to draw my cover art idea, it's been on my mind almost from the start. And then, of course, to make at least two more games, hopefully before May is over. Will let you know!

And... as promised just the other day, the games are now published! Future devlogs will be posted on the project page; not sure what to do with this thread. Suggestions are welcome.

Guess I still have a use for this after all: due to taking a break, my next game in the series won't be for another day or two. In the mean time, here's a screenshot; you can probably guess what kind it is.

Have fun, I'll be right back!

At last! As promised, here's the first devlog posted on the project page proper, occasioned by releasing another game. Thanks for reading, and remember: there's more still to come!

This is nice! Love the versatility and the design exercise.

Thank you very much for the nice words!

And... it turns out I'm not entirely done with this thread anyway. A very stressful week left me exhausted and unable to think about games. Chasing down some false leads also slowed me down. But I finally have a concept for the final entry in this project, and something to show for it, too:

Ironically, I'm starting this game exactly a month after finishing the first one. But hey, at least it's not June yet. Be right back!

This is it! With one last devlog, the project is complete, barring later additions. Thanks for keeping up with me, and see you around. T-t-that's all, folks!
