I’m not 100% sure what you’re going for with text-based, but the first thing that comes to mind is Twine.

Nope, nothing comes to mind. I do a lot of my gamedev work in a TUI but that’s just because it works well for programming. Seems like a neat idea though.

Twine, definitely, unless you mean something like ZZT or MegaZeux?

You might have to anyway. I just tried MegaZeux again after several years (that's the modern, open source version of ZZT), and just, ugh.

Indeed, most engines were text-based before things became mainstream.

Source is mostly text-based. I’ve heard of Urho3D and jMonkeyEngine, also, but haven’t used them (I don’t bother with engines; they end up slowing me down instead).
