Welcome

Hello, I'm looking for people with a great form of critique skills, the type that knows how to be honest, the type that is not afraid to speak his/her mind, and the type that knows what to say as soon as they look at my project.

Why does this have to do with me or how does it affect me?

Well, I'm glad you have asked. Seeing as to how Itch.io contains game developers it would also be fair to also review the games of the very same members who looked at my projects, that would not hurt now, would it? not only that but it would also be good to meet people like that have common interests in game development! Maybe some form of collaboration to create something extraordinary!

Critique this

If you were to critique a screenshot from one of my projects, what would you say about this picture, how does this describe the game? I am launching an update in a few days so keep your eyes peeled.

I am honestly looking forward to starting a community with you guys, those that decide to join.

Thank You!

Overtold

Hey Pepperboi, I played your game.

To be honest the game stills needs a lot of work because there was no engagement for me, however I do think that the game looks good the art looks good the enemy design looks okay(enough to know that its the enemy you used the face to signify that).

What went wrong

First: The player movement

This destroyed the engagement to me because the player movement is slow, I got really bored. It took a really long time moving forward and to make up for that were the enemies on the way which was fine. I didn't enjoy the player movement at all.

Second: The Letters

I'm not sure why there isn't one button that you press when shooting but If that defines the games uniqueness then that fine. The problem that I have is the fonts for certain letters like G and C . I got confused. The fonts makes look the same, It does look different in comparison but when one of these letters are not together, Like G is next to A or C is next to T. I end up pressing the wrong letter because the letters look similar.

Third: the AI navigation

Looking at the following picture from below, the AI does not have a proper navigation towards its player. It gets stuck on a wall which isn't very good to be honest because now this lowers potential challenges. I almost makes it as if the enemy is blind. The enemy needs to avoid the wall more than chasing the player, this approach could make the  game better.

Fourth: Player Feedback

Now from this, it simply means that the enemies do not have a death animation  or there is no sound effects. Even when I collect health. This does not give me any form of satisfaction, It isn't very rewarding when to me as I play the game, this lowers engagement because its supposed to boast my sense of dopamine by giving me little rewards like this. This is what could make the game have high quality and better engagement if you apply these things that are missing, potentially adding some feel to the game.

Fifth: Pause Menu

The game has no pause menu instead there is a reset button. The game needs a pause menu for me to navigate backwards. Almost every game we play has to have some sort of navigation that takes us back to Main menu or  a way to stop. A reset button may not help, the game needs to have a pause menu .

Improvement

The game has the potential to improve but its currently lacking a lot. I had to be honest about the game otherwise the game would not improve whatsoever. Now please take account that I am not trying to bad person, I'm giving you feedback as to what the game really needs to become better.

Thank You!

Thanks, I'm glad you said what you didn't like so that I can improve! I'm making this game for the Finally Finish Something game jam and I'm hoping I can make it better.

 The player movement:

I think the movement is so slow because there is some lag but I can make it faster!

Second: The Letters

Some people liked the font so maybe that could be an option in the options menu.

Third: the AI navigation:

I wanted to use raycasts to tell if the player is not blocked by a wall but the lag went CRAZY so I'm still working on it.

Fourth: Player Feedback:

Im planning on making SFX for hitting the enemy and picking up HP, do you think that would be enough?

Fifth: Pause menu:

Im working on it, I dont know how to pause the game but I think I have an idea but for now if you press delete it brings you back to the start menu (I forgot to put it in the how to play).

Fourth: Aim to make your game the best that is all I'm asking whether there is SFX or not , your aim is to create a high quality game for people to play

Now I'll send you a Link on my game which is coming out on Friday

I am going to upgrade it more later I just have a deadline to submit it to the game jam.

You have my thanks

Hi Overtold, your post sounds quite interesting and I guess when browsing through my profile's comments, you could notice some of my game's reviews there :-)

For that added pic, I'd add thoughts like: Those walls do look awesome in 3d, while the textline "This is not a dream..." sounds interesting in its meaning, also getting me curious what hides at the destination of either the red or purple marked spot. I like the sky's colours and the general font/size/colour for text (also its font-type) looks okay.

That fire-animation looks bit bright in glowing-effect, while those flames look amazing in graphics/optical objects. that pistol looking quite "common" in design those bolts look not that realistic and just some shadows next to approx 2 colours (yellow/gold and black) sounds quite "okay", while I'd prefer animation like those wall's bricks (which are no straight surface and still looking nice even it's just either modelled in 3d or in 2d only).

"Find the cube of Astra" sounds cool as task, I like quests in general & I guess the lines being mentioned on the left or right side of the screen sounds like a standard-location? Maybe the "E to slow Time" could be referred as "E" in bold letters, while generally italic font in-game looks okay too. So far I can see just one type of text, possibly different font next to variety of colours cold suit too. I like that the timer includes a graphic which represents time, sounds simple still it could be useful to notice it, no matter if the game being in your first language or if you just like its visuals while text sounding less familiar in language. Probably I'm focusing on different details when feedbacking stuff, e.g. the "meters in distance" could be bit less big in size. And I like 3d-games with a character moving free, than just moving right/left, up/downwards only.

Wow you have my respect , thank you. I've  looked at your feedback and it looks really critical, I've just uploaded an update about 30 mins ago       https://overtold.itch.io/the-cube-of-astradownloadable

However some of the stuff that you told me about may not show up yet but the content is absolutely better than it was and its only a beta...

And by the way, be sure to send me a Link of your project so I can view it

Thanks for that compliment, at least sometimes my suggestions sound easy when reading but hard to visualize in coding, I guess? Sure I will also browse through that updated version & btw my game's published on my profile (so far the first one yet), still being planned with a sequel that's way easier in progressing, while it's like a textbased riddle there. With some devlogs including backstories, FAQ, thoughts and planned to share also tested devices on which this game should work before enabling the mobile-friendly & scrollbars as features.

Hi i will take a look at your project today i will leave feedback on your game page if you want  i will dwnload it now but pt feedback on your page later on. Are you willing to check out my game https://ellisjames20061.itch.io/gravity-swap and if you don't mind put feedback on game page?
