Looking for a Game and I Can't Remember the Name

Hello! Long time lurker, first time poster here on the community forums. I hope this is okay to post and ask about.

I remember playing a game that I found here a long time ago. It was a first person, 3D game where you're in a gallery of sorts, and looking at each picture on the walls brought you into the scene in the picture.

It was a puzzle game in that your goal once you're in the scene is to get back out - the twist is that no shadows are rendered, so if a wall and the floor are the same colour, you can't tell where the floor ends and the wall begins. I think the term for it is "flat shading?" But this was the unique mechanic.

I remember in the first level (the first painting you encounter and enter), you have to take a step up to reach the exit door. But you can't see the step you have to jump over because of the flat shading style.

I played it on Mac.

I remember that you can jump, I don't remember if you can sprint.

Hoping that someone will be able to help me out! Superliminal just came out recently and that's got me thinking of all the cool puzzle games with interesting mechanics, haha. Cheers!

EDIT: I have found the game, it is called Beyond Perception. Thank you to everyone who helped me!

At first this reminded me of “Super Mario 64”. Unfortunately I don’t think I’m aware of the game you are looking for, but it might help others if you include some extra description of what the game looked like.

  • Was it 2D/3D?

  • What platform did you play it on?

  • Did you remember any “signature” aspect the game had? Like a memorable character, or a very unique play element?

Hope someone finds the answer!

Thanks, Dark Dimension! I've added a few more details I can recall to the post in the hopes it will help.

If the developer took care of their tagging situation this should help:

I have created a filter based on what we know right now (assuming it was 3D because of the first person, it was free or pay-what-you-want, or otherwise it would be in your library), but it still spits out 255 results. If you happened to have played it on Mac 57 results or 50 results on Linux. Or 201 results on Windows.

Maybe have a look at the Tag Directory yourself and see what else seems fitting.

Unless somebody who played that game as well happens to see this thread, your best chance will be: Going though those 200-ish cover images and hope the one the developer chose was representative of their game…

Thank you very much, Wechenbetelly! I have looked through the list and cannot find it. Perhaps the developer took it down... But thank you nevertheless!

It’s entirely possible that the developer had a different thought process about their tagging situation than me… :/

While I’ve noticed a handful games vanish from itch in my (limited) time, in most of these cases they were either in a prototype stage (pretty common) or legally dubious (thankfully less common). While I can’t be certain, the description you gave made it sound like a game with interesting mechanics - which tend to stick around. :)

I mean no disrespect towards your computer of choice when I say this, but the game being available on Mac will help you to narrow the number of results down in future searches.

There's this game I played a while back probably in 2020, You play as this kid (or something I don't know everyone is colors and pixel shapes) waiting for the bus. It's cold outside and with you are 4 people, and you can go into the forest behind you and when you die in a way it will give you a letter to your name but if you die the same way twice it will only give you the same letter.

If there's anyone who knows what the name of this game is please help it's been driving me crazy.

Thank you :)
