expiring license?

Hi, is there something like an expiring license after purchase? So a softwater buyer can get free updates for 1 or 2 years, after that the buyer has to purchase again to get updated release.

The short answer is, it depends on the developer.

When you buy a project, you are entitled to download every file that belongs to that project, the only exception being files that have a different price (as set by the developer). So in theory, if after 10 years the developer updates that game, you will be able to claim those updates for free.

However in the real world, a developer can’t be paid once and work for many years (especially in the indie scene), so they might implement different ways to make sure their work is funded. This can be done by either making optional DLCs for a price, or making a sequel for a game, or adding some kind of subscription for extra content.

My advice would be, when you buy a game, do it because of what it looks like now, and not what it is promised to become in the future. The only exception being games that are still under development (betas, early access), in which case users are funding its development, and are aware of the risk that the game might not become a success.

This is strictly for games here. Other types of software can come with a guarantee for updates.

yes ok, I was asking this as a software seller. Ideally I would like to have a checkbox as ‘expire download link after 2 years’ or ‘limit free updates to 2 years’. Now buyers can buy the software 1 time and get free updates forever. Starting another project after a release is the other option now, but thats hassle.

Well… You get to keep their money forever as well, so I would say that updates are part of the value proposal at this point. If I put myself into the mind of your customer for a moment: I have just bought your product and the latest version comes with something that reads to me as “from now on, bugfixes will only be free for two years” (not saying that’s what you’re actually proposing - just how it may sound) I would likely looking into how long after purchase I can still get my money back…

Maybe consider bringing out a new product every few years (like Farming Simulator does it) or offer new features as DLC packages.

As an example, on the software release page there is a message like: ‘This version will work with licenses purchased after 28-Jul-2019’ The already purchased version will continue to work of course. Customer has the choice to keep using the old version, or pay a new license for an updated version.
