Hi. I am sorry to announce that I was indeed not able to comment on all games on time. I work full time and I had some issues this week that trashed my schedule. I want to let you guys know that I rated all the games you've submitted, and enjoyed them to the fullest. I'll be more weary in the future with my promises. I hope that you guys had a great jam and that you got the result you wanted from your games. Hope to see you guys on the next one!

[SUMMARY] 📊

Journey of a Black Hole is an agar.io inspired game and a nice entry to the Brackeys Game Jam.

I did not reach the win state, because I have more reviews to write and I got stuck when my star was big enough to be eaten by red rogue stars.

[GAME DESIGN] 🎲

  • The Good: Good premise, it works and it's intuitive to learn. The light speed mechanic is good.
  • The Bad: There are some rogue red stars that kill you instantly even on the easiest difficuly setting.
  • My AdviceBalance and playtest early! Everytime you can, build and send the game to family and friends (or the game jam discord) and gather their feedback. Build often!

[FUN] 🤣

  • The Good: Satisfying to see your star grow!
  • The Bad: A bit boring at the start.
  • My Advice: Same as above!

[INNOVATION] 💡

  • The Good: A star that moves and the years count on the bottom left are very original ideas!
  • The Bad: A bit derivative. Too similar to agar.io.
  • My Advice: Try and make your game yours! Twist the mechanics a bit.

[THEME]📖

  • The Good: A black hole! What else can I say?
  • The Bad: -
  • My Advice: Maybe don't go with the obvious. An original approach to the theme can help you on Game Design as well as on the Innovation category.

[GRAPHICS]🎨

  • The Good: Consistent and well done. Nice menus!
  • The Bad: Could use some more polish!
  • My Advice: You can modify Post Processing on runtime to achieve cool effects!

[AUDIO]🔊

[FINAL RATING]  🥇

Overall, a good entry to the jam. Good theme use and nice graphics. The Innovation and Fun could get some love.

[SUMMARY] 📊

Planet Earth vs Wild Planet is an interesting 2 player addition to the game jam.

[GAME DESIGN] 🎲

  • The Good: Designing for two players is always a challenge, and this has been done well!
  • The Bad: I just wih there'd been more mechanics or different levels. I think the idea has potential and has only been explored a bit.
  • My Advice: Keep making games! I'm sure you learned a lot from this jam and the game design seems a bit suffocated from trying to finish the game on time. You'll get better at this!

[FUN] 🤣

  • The Good: Excellent use of particles and very nice movement feel. The funny faces also help :)
  • The Bad: Bottlenecked by a lack of polish and depth on the game design side.
  • My Advice: It's honestly very well made. Maybe a bit of screenshake could help?

[INNOVATION] 💡

  • The Good: Very original concept.
  • The Bad: Bottlenecked again by a general lack of depth. Wish you had more time to develop the idea further!
  • My Advice: Portals are a bit overdone, especially the blue / orange color could look a bit derivative.

[THEME]📖

  • The Good: -
  • The Bad: Not even mentioned in the game backstory!
  • My Advice: Don't be afraid of the theme! It can be a very enriching experience to constrain yourself to an idea.

[GRAPHICS]🎨

  • The Good: Consistent and well done.
  • The Bad: The menus need a bit of love.
  • My Advice: Menus can be started earlier! Don't rush to finish them on the last minutes, it'll be worth it! People notice them!

[AUDIO]🔊

  • The Good: It has music!
  • The Bad: Lacks sound effects.
  • My Advice: Go with bfxt.net if you need quick sound effects!

[FINAL RATING]  🥇

Overall, a good entry to the jam. The 2 player mechanic, the solid graphics and the nice particle effects give it a good score!

[SUMMARY] 📊

Memories is a platformer game with lots of potential.

I did not get to complete the game, as I have several other reviews to write and I got stuck on the second level.

[GAME DESIGN] 🎲

The Good: Can't go wrong with a platformer!

The Bad: Could use some more balance.

My Advice: Think first about game design. It's the core of your game and it's what'll make it stand out. Take a look at some famous platformers and try and understand what made them fun. Design the levels beforehand, if you can simplify the game to be able to prototype it on paper, all the better! Can't stress enough how important this is.

[FUN] 🤣

The Good: The camera effects and shooting.

The Bad: Stiff controls.

My Advice: Go nuts! Don't be afraid to make your game pop out. I understand that this is your first game jam, and you did a great job already. Look into "Game feel" talks on youtube or even read some books on the matter.

[INNOVATION] 💡

The Good: A fire boy that shoots water is pretty "fresh" hehe.

The Bad: Another simple platformer.

My Advice: Let the jam theme help you make the game interesting! By integrating the theme into the mechanics beforehand you can come up with some very cool and innovative ideas. Creativity is bred on restrictions!

[THEME]📖

The Good: It's mentioned in the backstory.

The Bad: It's hardly integrated in the game theme or its mechanics.

My Advice: Same as above! Take the jam theme as an opportunity, not as a nuisance :)

[GRAPHICS]🎨

The Good: Very good job on the animations and on integrating the artstyle together.

The Bad: None, given that's a game jam game. Kudos!

My Advice: Keep it up! Great potential.

[AUDIO]🔊

The Good: Complete set of sounds.

The Bad: Form should follow function. It's not enough to make a checklist of sounds for each action. The sound should convey something. For example, the jump sound does not convey the jumping action at all.

My Advice: Given that it's a game jam, I get that you guys did not have any more time left! If you find yourselves constrained by time again and don't know where to get sounds from, I'd go with https://www.bfxr.net/ next time!

[FINAL RATING]  🥇

Overall, a good entry to the jam. Impressed by the amount of work that went into this! Keep up the good work!

[SUMMARY] 📊

Just Digging is a surprisingly fun and deep exploration action RPG game.

[GAME DESIGN] 🎲

The two bosses are very interesting to fight against and the exploratory nature of the game is surprisingly deep and well polished. The slimes could've been more thought out.

[FUN] 🤣

Had fun exploring and raged a lot against the bosses. The first minutes of gameplay are pretty bland, which could throw some players off. I'd work on the player speed, hit effects and the enemy AI.

Talks I recommend:

[INNOVATION] 💡

The laser boss struck me as very innovative. Zelda Breath Of The Wild mixed with the classic 2D ones. Kudos. The dungeon crawling part felt a bit too repetitive and established. I'd advise to integrate the theme into the game design a bit more to get some originality going.

[THEME]📖

It's there, and noone can argue against it. Same as above,  I'd advise to integrate the theme into the game design a bit more.

[GRAPHICS]🎨

Tiling effect well done, clear UI. I would have used only one artstyle for the game. If you have an artist, only use their work, even if it's not great. Art in games is a lot about consistency. I'd prefer a game with a not-great artstyle but consistent rather than a patched together work.

[AUDIO]🔊

Liked that there are two audio tracks, one for normal gameplay and one for the boss fights. My advice would be to make the sounds at home by yourself and experinmenting a bit with sound generation before going straight to bfxr to get full points in this aspect. I feel like bfxr woul've made sense in a more 8bit-ish game, not here. But overally, good work on the audio side.

[FINAL RATING]  🥇

Very interesting boss fight and exploration, although a bit lacking on the graphics side.

[SUMMARY] 📊

Weasel real estate is a surprisingly polished game for a week-long game jam. The good use of post processing and the possibilities of unlocking features on completion really stand out. Gameplay, on the other hand, suffers from a slight lack of depth.

[GAME DESIGN] 🎲

An interesting mix of tetris and top-down shooter mechanics. I just wished the game relied more on the "tetris" side and allowed for more interesting interactions between moles and holes. Still, an interesting idea worth exploring further.

[FUN] 🤣

I can definitely say that I had fun playing this game. There's a certain satisfaction on making your weasel go nuts with the hammer and to get stressed out by the sheer number of moles invading one's property. I just wished you guys had a bit more of time to polish the digging and hitting effects.

[INNOVATION] 💡

I've not seen a game like this before. It's an interesting idea, albeit a bit over-done in this jam in particular.

[THEME]📖

It sticks to the theme, and it does it well. It could have used some more graphics to emphasize it, although just as a "nice to have" feature.

[GRAPHICS]🎨

Spot on and consistent through the game. Also, a fan of the highly polished UI. The mole digging effects feel a bit out of place, but aren't particularly distracting. Very good job on this side.

[AUDIO]🔊

Good enough. The sound effects are there, and the music is catchy and goes very well with the overall theme of the game. As a side note, the music stops when going from the main menu to the game itself. I recommend to use a DontDestroyOnLoad audio source if you're planning on doing this on the future. It gets rid of the "cut" and provides a more seamless transition from main menu to the game.

[FINAL RATING]  🥇

A top contestant of this jam. Graphics do the game very well, but the lack of polish behind the game design cannot go unnoticed. Also, some graphical bugs bring the score a tad bit down. 8 / 10
