Awesome, thank you!  Yep, each track follows the guidelines, I just want to combine them, mostly for utilitarian reasons.

Thanks again for the quick response.  Looking forward to hearing all the work for this jam!

Hey Grunt.  Quick question.  Can I combine all 3 tracks into a single song for my submission?  I know it seems trivial, but I'd rather just have them all together as one.

(1 edit)

How have I not heard of Visible Cloaks??  I'm a sucker for electronic duo acts (Boards of Canada, Autechre, Global Communication, Phoenecia etc).  I'll check them out.  Anyways, you're spot on about the mix, it needs some love.  Missing high end and low end, too much mids.  But I'm glad you still enjoyed it, and TY for the music recommendation.

Love the constructive feedback! I agree with all your points and will take that all into account the next time I sit down and try to make music again.  Thank you.

Thank you for the kind words Eetu.  I'll probably try to do something more harmonically/melodically involved next time.  You and others blew me away with your level of composition.

Super glad you enjoyed it, despite some of my questionable decisions lol.  Wasn't sure what to call it so I just put Ambient.  Great work yourself, I loved the guitar work you brought to this jam.

Heck yeah, another Blender user!  Free software and plugins FTW!  Glad you enjoyed my little sonic experiment.

Without reading your description, I could immediately tell this was in the vein of Ravel/Debussy/Satie.  Very cool to use the era of the painting to inspire your musical style.  The piece is very relaxing and the dissonance that you used sometimes sounded Impressionist and sometimes sounded Romantic which kept things very interesting.

Oh god, when it picks up at :40 I got the chills.  This is such a powerful musical statement. When the trumpets declare the motif again around 1:14 I got the chills again.  Whoa!  Such a powerful melody and I really really really appreciate you weren't scared to repeat it, and relish in it.  This one might get stuck in my head.

This seems like it would fit perfectly in a PS1-era JRPG like Chrono Cross.  It's so triumphant and happy, and I think part of that owes to the fact that you're peppering in some sombre/minor chords here and there.  The big harmonic shift at 0:38 was refreshing and again reminds me of JRPG music.  Arrangement changes keep this engaging and fun, you really packed a lot into 2 and a half minutes while still making it all cohesive.  Nice work!

Very nice stereo imagining and gentle use of reverb.  I feel like I'm sitting in an actual chamber listening to your composition being performed live.  Nice!

Those reversed, swirling sounds in the beginning were really cool and I really love all the space you're creating in this piece.  Nice work

Oohhh this is a beautiful blend of synthetic and orchestral elements.  That sizzling 8-bit-esque synth dancing in the background is such a perfect textural addition.  Great choice.  Very strong motif, stronger than many submissions I've listened to.  The arrangement change at 1:33 was unexpected yet so smooth.  The mood shifts into something more joyous and uplifting here.

Such a tender mix.  It's amazing how the high-frequency instruments pierce through even though they're quiet and so far away.  So much warmth in this track.  Great work!

This is incredible for your first orchestral arrangement.  Very fun, upbeat and fitting to the theme.  Definitely getting some Vivaldi/Baroque vibes.  You must have some serious music theory chops to be able to so closely mimic that 17th-18th century sound.  Great submission.

Beautiful string arrangement, I especially dig those moments of single-voice dissonance that punctuate the harmonious strings, almost like it's foreshadowing something bigger.  It just becomes more powerful as the song progresses, and by the time the bass enters, the dissonance is structured into whole chords.

Very magical journey that seemed a bit brief, but then I looked at the track length and saw it was almost 3 minutes long.  You had me captivated the whole way!  Nice submission.

Legend of the White Flower - really cool atmosphere with lots of space here.  The contrast of the 8-bit-esque lead with the wavetable/physically modeled mallet instrument is cool.  Love when you suddenly drop the wooshy synth for a big textural changeup.

White Gardens - continuing with the atmosphere you created in the first track is great.  It's very cohesive.  The bass is beautiful, and the sudden chromatic harmonic shift caught me off guard in a really good way.  I love those unexpected moments.

Respite - So much space!  Great use of reverb.  This one is giving me Hyper Light Drifter vibes.  The lead is fricken beautiful and has so much texture.

Beautiful cohesive electronic suite.  The mixing is really good.  This is the second Surge XT entry I've heard and I think I'm sold on it.

Thank you for the listen Emestate.  I was worried it might get a bit repetitive, so I'm glad to hear you were engaged.  I actively tried changing it up during the buildup to distract listeners from the rising synth pad.

Great work yourself.  Looking forward to hearing your future submissions.

“The bass drop is essentially a musical exploitation of our brain’s reward system,”
From an article I ran across about the impact of bass in modern music.  When you introduce that insanely cool bass riff in your 2nd song, it became the most memorable moment in this jam for me (so far).  I will definitely explore the power of bass in the next jam.

Thank you for listening Simish!!  I'll probably continue down the electronic/experimental road; I absolutely love making sounds with synthesizers.

Fantastic job on your entry.  It gave me goosebumps.  I'm looking forward to hearing more of your work.

Thanks Denn!  Nice work yourself.  Those birds chirps have me dancing.

Yeah, I was listening to "Corc" by Autechre and heard all sorts of subtle percussive sounds that were exponentially speeding up or slowing down, creating these insanely cool little embellishments, and figured I'd try recreating them.  That arpeggiator idea got me close-ish but still not as good as theirs.

It's hard to resist tweaking knobs and putting LFO's, envelopes and automation on literally everything.  Glad you enjoyed my mix; I thought it sounded like complete sh*t after listening to everyone elses.  I guess it certainly isn't harsh but doesn't stand out much either.  Anyways, thank you for leaving a comment Mr. FoxHyode, and your experiment definitely stood out which is a ++++ for me.

Oof "quick statements" that's so accurate.  I wasn't even consciously aware of it at the time, but you're 100% right.  I guess I was imagining little critters coming out of hibernation and making goofy noises, one after another.  Great comparison Dacelo, I appreciate it.

Checking out Serious Sam OST now.  I'm ashamed to say I've never even heard of it. I can totally see the retro-psych vibes too, even though that wasn't my intention.  Cool to see how other people perceive my weird noises!  Cheers.

Sorrowful Departure: Dark and romantic, oozing with atmosphere.  The mixing is freakin fantastic.  Short and sweet but sets the mood.  The lovely textures during the first few seconds of the song were very cool.

Waves Dancing in the Night:  Sombre and full of nice harmonies that suggest hope.

You really know how to write emotional chord progressions, which is something I admire as I struggle in that department.  Very nice works.

Gotta say, your mix/arrangement is so bright and full.   Big transparent sub bass and bass.  Lovely leads that fill in the 5Khz+ regions nicely. The stereo imaging is perfect.   The sounds you chose are super warm and analog sounding.  Did you use a freaking Minimoog???  This sounds much louder and clearer than other entries without becoming obnoxious or imbalanced.  I can imagine Keith Emerson playing this song in two takes, with the second one being an overdub.  The overall feeling is playful and regal, a bit like a court jester.

The Sturm and Drang is strong with this one!  Amazing use of Romantic-era dissonance and resolution.  The shifting arrangements definitely evoke the likes of Brahms and Beethoven.  The Symphonic Squirrel - you really live up to your name.

8-bit? SNES?  Soundfont?  This is a very interesting blend of instruments that span a few decades.  Very experimental and bizarre, and held together by some really nice melodies.  The rubato is neat.  The second song must feature the 41-edo tuning?  These are some very interesting harmonies.  Your restrained stereo imaging is actually very refreshing.  The stereo instruments really stand out.

Always refreshing to hear live guitar and an indie rock arrangement.  This was super chill.  Very nice guitar work and I like the wet mix.

Your arrangements start out very minimal and slowly bring in more instruments, which I was a big fan of.   Your choice of harmonies is certainly nostalgic and slightly sombre, but the way you change them up keeps things very interesting combined with the addition/subtraction of instruments.  Beautiful selection of sounds, this was a pleasure to listen to.

You might not have been feeling it, but I was.  Playful and frolicking, your orchestration stands out from what I've heard so far in this jam with the light-hearted atmosphere you're creating.  And that bass!!!  The mix here is so nice.

The song's short length plays into your fun interpretation of Spring.  It evokes the images of animals coming out of hibernation and celebrating the lukewarm, damp air by wrestling around, jumping, hopping, and playfighting with eachother.  It's almost Disney-esque.

Maybe you didn't make anything else because you nailed it the first time!  The cheerful take is very fitting IMO and this is a stand out piece.

The bird chirping that fills out the stereo high frequencies is really nice.  After a bit, you can tell the bird chirps are part of a long loop that slowly starts to suggest a rhythm, and by the end of the song, the bird chirps are almost functioning as hi-hats dancing with the shaker and the finger snaps in the background.  I don't know why I'm so fascinated with the bird chirping, maybe it's the way you've turned into into a percussive instrument.  And that's pretty darn neat.

The harmonies and melodies are serene, adventurous and well done.  The overall arrangement definitely evokes the image of cherry blossom petals floating on the breeze.  When the saxophone solo hits, I'm transported back in time to the early 1900's for some reason.  Which is perfect given the painting we were provided.  Nice work!

You faked me out so hard at the beginning with those retro-SNES pads that immediately morphed into a lovely orchestra!!  Such a cool moment. The way you're blending synths with traditional orchestral elements works really well.  These pieces have a strong harmonic backbone supported by soft arpeggiated synths.  You are creating lovely chord progressions and are relishing in their beauty, and it's refreshing.

The End of Spring is my favorite, the drums sound really well mixed, and the effervescent arpeggiated synths, and the lead synth organ both blend well with the sombre orchestra.

Love the floating feeling of Meadow at Dawn . It seems free and winding, creating this gorgeous atmosphere that makes me feel like I'm traveling.   The arrangement is really nice.  The stereo imagining is very surround sound here, like nothing is in front of me and everything is surrounding me.  Very surreal.

The bass melody in Grey Petals is so beautiful.  The upward pitch bend in the attack is so cool.  The bass's strength creates insanely beautiful harmonies with your orchestra.  It feels so rooted and stable, like I've stopped my journey to take in the sight of a temple overgrown with white flowering vines.  This really hit home for me.

The last track seems like a more pared down version of Grey Petals.  Like night has fallen and I'm falling asleep next to the bonfire I made near the temple.

This definitely creates some strong emotions that fit the artwork extremely well.  Very nice work.

Edit:  And the cover art is phenomenal, I almost prefer it to the original!!  I took a look at the art for your previous works and gotta say I really dig your style

Very emotive and cinematic.  You kept the composition centered around one melodic idea, so when the shift near the end happens, it hits hard.  The restraint you showed with incorporating the synths was amazing, they add a perfect amount of texture without distracting from your ideas.  Beautifully mixed and arranged.

This is pure, rich atmospheric goodness.  The arrangement is so well balanced, the stereo imaging is immaculate, and I love love love the percussive textures that float around the guitar.  Especially that zipping/creaking sound.  So cool.  I've listened to this a handful of times because it's so pleasant.

Love the nostalgic, carefree and floating feeling of this piece.  Had no idea I'd get to listen to a track arranged with all live electric guitar/bass, but I am pleasantly surprised.  This sounds so good, you know what you're doing and it shows.  The way you introduce static/noise and then saturation into the 2nd half of the song sounds intentional and really cool.  Giving me Tame Impala vibes, especially the saturated chaotic drumming near the end.  Very cool choice of harmonies here, and the unconventional tapping/sliding guitar techniques add a lot of texture.  Great stuff!

Starting the song with an arrangement of inharmonic bell/gong type instruments was genius.  Listening to the song transform into a very harmonically rich, melodic piece was very pleasant on my ears.  I'm not an academically trained classical musician, but this had elements of romantic and impressionistic music blended together seamlessly.  Very cinematic and beautifully arranged,  Gave me feelings of mystery, exploration... like a magical forest with dark secrets and dangerous creatures hidden from sight.

Extremely beautiful production, I love all the space you're giving.  It would be really easy to put layer upon layer upon layer, but your restraint, letting the reverb "breath", and letting the individual voices shine, is excellent.

The percussive beatboxing in the beginning and the choral drop at 1:05 create a really nice contrast.  The choral drop feels very "holy" and slightly otherwordly, it made me feel tingly.  I would say this is a very successful experiment.
