Ooooo thank you for letting me know!! I'll look into it more <3 Hope it gets fixed soon ;-;

THANK YOU DO MUCHHHH <3 <3 That means so much coming from you!!

I'm so sorry about the game save :( I hadn't tried it and unfortunately it seems like a hit or a miss-- It was my first time using JSON save/load so I need to really hammer it down sadly- I'll definitely look into it!

Thank you so much for letting me know! I might poke you on discord to ask more about the processing / drink issue! If you're using the Mac Build I believe that part of your issue with the seeds might have had to do with the inventory bug I encountered today and resolved only in the PC build (Where if you switched items, it wasn't saving the stack amount so you could either lose all your items or duplicate all your items rip) but the sugar seeds is interesting! I'll take a gander!

I'm so sorry for all the bugs! I hope you enjoyed regardless <3 It's been awesome meeting you through this jam and its an honor to have you play my game <3 <3  can't wait to see where yours heads too!

Hey you guys!! Great attempt! It is a very cute concept for sure and it's a great start! :) Congrats on everything you managed to get in!

A couple things that I noticed if you plan to continue going  forward or in the future if you plan to make anything else together :)

  • The camera movement is very sensitive. I don't have motion sensitivity and I got a migraine and nausea from certain camera jumps, especially while dashing! A good camera is one that you don't think about, so make sure to hammer that down :)
  • The UI alignment of some of the text is a bit off in certain places
  • From the title screen, clicking on 'options' made the menu jump down to the bottom right. While it's not a big deal, keeping your menus aligned so that the eye doesn't need to jump around helps keep things cohesive and prevents emersion breaking~
  • You can get stuck behind this stump hehe

Thank you so much for the kind words and the suggestions!

I definitely agree with the field being cumbersome, I believe it has to do with the raycast being a bit strangely placed, so I'll fiddle with that to see if I can get it to feel better! I appreciate the feedback on that :) And I'll look into a buffer for the character dialogue as well!

Thank you for playing and for the very helpful suggestions <3

I think your controls are intuitive enough for no tutorial, and that's highly commendable! I think what tipped me off to being able to move was seeing my knight enter my FoV and then realizing there were stuff to do! It gave me neopets game vibes-- but like obviously a million times better. Just hella nostaglia for those tower defense games!

I'm so bad at words haha what I meant was it felt like the animation when the seed nyooms in from existence (Not the loading bar, that felt right to me!) didn't change with the fast forward, but I could just be wrong! In the way that it felt!

Amazing work!!

Thank you so so much!! It has now been fixed~

Thank you so much for playing :) <3

Hi! It's a systems prototype for a gamejam, not a full game release :) It's endless so you can play as much or little as you want

(1 edit)

AHHHHHHH I WAS LITERALLY ABOUT TO SEND YOU A VOICE NOTE THE OTHER DAY AND DIDN'T BECAUSE I GOT SO SWAMPED LOL

It's so so so good to hear from you <3 <3 Thank you so much, seeing your comment really made my week! It's been a hot minute since I put out a solo project haha

I hope you're well and I'll talk to you as soon as I'm not crushed in gamedev hell hehe

P.S. Its definitely broken so I'm planning on uploading fixes when the jam voting ends sobs

I haven't gotten super deep in but SEBBY THIS IS SO IMPRESSIVE!! the world, level design, functionality and OH MY GOD the sounds are just -chefs kiss-.  It's such a good submission and I'm so amazed by it! I'll play a bit more soon but I needed to tell you that you did a phenomenal job!

YOOOO THIS IS AWESOME! This is definitely a favourite of mine so far.

I had a blast playing. The controls were fairly intuitive, but I wish I knew that I could move around sooner. I REALLY loved how it wasn't just farming to make money, it felt like there was a lot of strat and purpose. I really appreciated that.

I wish that it was possible to strategize the crops you grew a bit more, and there were some weird happenings like the fighting cancelling at certain points. I also found that the speedup mechanic made the seeds a bit slow to appear in the center (or like the same speed as normal items) but either way I enjoyed a lot!! I played for fun for quite some time :) I liked my lil soldier guys!

The art is phenomenal as expected but the gameplay is tight and nice! Congrats on making it this far :)

WOW! What a neat game! I really enjoyed the tetris style gameplay, that was pretty neat.  I really liked the assets and aesthetic a lot, the music was calming and chill. I was a bit lost at first, but I figured it out~

Things I loved:

  • The assets and aesthetic
  • the music
  • The sounds were SOOO Satisfying
  • The tetris-style gameplay is so cool
  • The potion making was a neat feature

Things that I'd love to see:

  • There was a little cognitive dissonance between the shape of the crops and the crops themselves- I wish there were a way to strategize more based on what's available
  • The game loop is solid, but I was a bit at a loss other than just expanding my farm. "Why am I doing what I'm doing" wasn't immediately clear other than just growing more crops.
  • The movement was a bit slippery, so either to transition to a more tight control scheme or allow for controller input would be very very helpful!
  • More feedback for days changing (I thought it was broken so I spammed the button lol) and for potions would be great!

Great work!!

DORKYYYYYYYY

First off, let me say it's been so lovely to get to know you over the course of the jam, it made sticking around great!

I'm going to give some feedback based on the prototype, congrats on your first game you did awesome!!! I was kinda silly and saw the +1 age and my half asleep brain was like "Oh wow this game is made for ages 1 and up!" and then it took me a couple minutes to realize it was a button LOL But that's my own silliness

Things I loved:

  • The assets you used were beautiful and cohesive
  • THE SNAIL FRIENDS
  • GOD your level design is great. There's a lot of nice space to move around and I was pleasantly surprised by how much world there was! You did a great job utilizing the space nicely and I enjoyed walking around and snoozin'
  • The day/night cycle was so pretty!
  • Your UI was pretty functional and I did enjoy the dropdown menu when you clicked on items!
  • The building transition was sick

Things I'd love to see:

  • MORE SNAIL FRENS

A few things to look into:

  • Infinite item glitch: If you dropped an item from the hotbar, it'd stay in your inventory and you can clone indefinitely!
  • Making the background of the inventory transparent and over the world may be a tad less jarring!

It's a really neat prototype and you did fantastic!! The design is so lovely so far and I really hope to see you continue it :) I want more snail frens

This is fantastic! I'm so happy to see all of the amazing additions you made! Everything is so lovely, and I love the book of recipes.

I really love this game, the aesthetic and vibe :) I guess the main thing that I'd say is the game is a bit slow at times! It was a bit hard to plan ahead to buy the seeds needed,  especially when the prices were growing it felt a bit too slanted to the point where I felt like i wasn't making back the money I was spending. BUT it was a lot of fun regardless! I adore this game and the aesthetic so much!! <3

As I've said a million times I ADORE your game so much! It's awesome to see how much it's grown since I playtested it! It's a ton of fun with a really lighthearted feel, and the music sounds awesome. I love the cel-shading and the distinct style of the art, it's beautiful and it's one of my favourites in the jam!

Things I adored:

  • The music fit beautifully with the ambiance of the game
  •  The art is fantastic. I think the minimal shading and the colours give it a really striking aesthetic that makes it stand out
  • I love the creature design so much, they're brilliant!
  • The call to action with the angels made night time a lot of fun! Huge improvement over the last one!
  • THE CLOCK!!!
  • The customization and how pretty your shop can look after customizing
  • I loved learning what the upgrades did!!
  • Honestly a stunning looking game, I can't say it enough I think its so distinctive and memorable I could see your aesthetic from miles away. The frog was also brilliant and I loved them sm LOL

A few things that I noticed that I wanted to share (for the future):

  • If your pots are overlapping, you will sometimes plant double the seeds
  • Planting sometimes allows you to plant multiple seeds without returning to the shop, but sometimes it quits. I liked being able to do it one-shot though
  • The stick doubles after the potion tutorial
  • The tutorial ended very abruptly, so I was waiting for more
  • There is a strategy to your game, you can actually grow two sets of plants by evening and stop growing until the next morning and then before the heart-tree or upgrades you can avoid the angels all-together- which made life easier but made for a lot of waiting around
  • There is a bit of cognitive dissonance between the potions you can make and the ingredients to make them. I found it hard to remember the combos just by looking at the final product
  • There is some choppiness still when dragging on occasion
  • The angels can glitch out on occasion

AMAZING work! I'm so proud of you!! You did incredible <3

[Edit] An updated build has been added that removes this issue, it was built twice for some reason in two separate folders, my apologies!

AHHH My apologies, try the exe in the monobleeding edge folder, I built to the wrong location rip updating the build atm so feel free to re-download in a few and it should work!

Thank you so so much for the kind words <3 <3 I really appreciate it!

[EDIT 2] Build released with mouse functionality and inventory switching for 1-7 numbers :)

[EDIT] I'm going to be releasing a build later on that introduces right, left click and scroll wheel for tool picking! I think I might reconsider the number keys for tools rather than inventory or have a toggle in the settings! Thank you for the feedback :) Unfortunately an integrated tutorial won't be possible for a while for time reasons but rest assured it is in the plans!

------

Thank you so much for playing!! I apologize, I keep forgetting the jam submission is separate from the game page (where I have my listed notes and issues as well as the controls due to not having time to implement the tutorial) but the integrated tutorial is an immediate post-jam thing that I sadly ran out of time for.  The controls were also a product of last-minute crunch, since mouse was actually not meant to be part of the control scheme (it was supposed to be purely keyboard and controller with mouse inventory interactions as an option) but ended up being a necessity due to time constraints with the code, so hopefully that helps explain why things ended up as they were! Number keys are also written out in the GDD for inventory swapping.

Based on your suggestion I might add right and left click since its a quick fix

Thank you so much for the kind words and the feedback, they are noted and align with my own desires going forward. It sucks I couldn't get the controls fully explained and working in time for the jam, but I'm still glad you enjoyed and I appreciate the feedback since I'm more familiar with gamepad than mouse/keyboard controls.

Thank you so so much Sebby <3 <3 I look forward to playing your game too!! Thank you so much for playing!

I'll respond to messages in the morning please bare with me <3 Version 1.11 of the game has been released!

  • Tons of bug fixes & polish
  • Fishing!!
  • Exploration!!
  • Cutscene!!
  • Various other things!

The major issue right now is the heads up display notifications for receiving items do not stack and therefore if you collect 4 apples, you get 4 notifications. Tomorrow I'll be adding the catch for this so you only would get 1 for all four apples. The code just wasn't working.

There are still known bugs and QoL things that I'd like to get in before the update lock. Seasons don't presently work at all since they're not really important but maybe that'll be something I can squeeze in-- hey I got an essay worth of stuff done today so who knows!

(1 edit)

Please view above for future plans & known bugs before sharing your bugs or suggestions! This was such a blast to make in a month, but holy cannoli, it was a handful!

I was a one-woman team who made this game in one month,  and I made all art assets, code and design from scratch (+ Brightbone as my composer). I definitely pushed myself to my utmost limits timewise, so please treat this like a prototype rather than a polished game. You will encounter bugs and poor QoL in places, those are things I will be fixing in the days to come.

Thank you for being patient and kind with me as I resolve the issues <3

Hi Leilani! Thank you so so much for this wonderful and sweet comment. I haven't been here in a while so I apologize for the belated reply!

I really appreciate this so much! The crashing had to do with some weird issue with my coding, if I ever re-did this game I would love to make it in unity <3

I'm so so glad, you're valid and seen. Sending so much love your way! Congratulations on your transition :) <3

Oh my goodness ;;; I'm so sorry for the late reply but I'm so happy you enjoyed the game <3 That means the world to me!!

I love the nicknames you gave them I approve LOL I appreciate the feedback so much! I've been away from making VNs for a while but this has motivated me to pick them up again ^^ Thank you so much for your comment it made my day!

Ahh Thank you so much for the kind words!! I'm so glad you enjoyed the game ;;

Oh my gossssshhhhhh THAT CARD it's so cute ;;;;  The cast are childhood OCs of mine, so they have a lot more development including some real-world interests and stuff outside of the game! I for one accept that Alice is canonically a fan of Yu-Gi-Oh too :)

Thank you so much for the comment and the lovely card!! I'll cherish it ;;

That appears to be an itch.io side issue unfortunately ;; I would suggest trying to download it again and it should work! Most users seem to be okay and trying on a few devices on my end seems to be okay so it might be a random issue <3 Try refreshing and trying again ^^

Ahhhhh thank you so much ;-; <3 <3 that means the work to me ;-;

AHHH OH MY GOSH This was so sweet ;;; Thank you so much for the kind words!

I'm so, so glad you ended up feeling so strongly towards Robin ;;; He's one of my favourite characters and I feel like Him and Kira were truly the reason I wanted to make this VN. Thank you so much for playing and for your kind words! I'm so sorry for the late reply! <3

AHHHH That makes me so happy to hear ;;;; You definitely will see more of him soon <3 Good to know where I should set my priorities ^^

Thank you for your comment <3 It made my day!

Not at all! I've actually been just super busy as I've entered game design school-wise! I genuinely have been making an effort to look into different storylines to re-write the routes and get this going again <3

Paper Roses means the world to me and hearing that really motivates me to take the plunge and update it so thanks for the comment <3 I'll see what I can do when assignments calm down a bit ^^

AHHHHH This absolutely made my month ;; Thank you so much for the sweet comment ahh I'm so glad you enjoyed the game <3 Thank you so much for playing!

This absolutely made my week. Thank you so, so much for this lovely comment. I'm so glad I could reach you as an artist and I hope someday you'll find that spark that gets you to write <3

Thank you so much for playing and the kind words <3 They mean the world to me!

Ahh I apologize for the late reply! Thank you so much ;; This made my day <3 <3 I hope to finish polishing sometime in the future!

Not stupid at all! Anna x Kierce are supposed to be a pairing but quite honestly I don't remember if it's in the game yet since I intended to re-write the route when things looked up a bit! I fully intend to fix them soon :) Thank you so much for playing and for the tidbits of help! You made my day and I'll be sure to polish it when I can <3

You're so sweet :) I'll keep that in mind and try to have a fix out by then!  I'll be sure to give it a good polishing very soon!

I'm sorry to hear. That's the worst... I wish you all the best <3

Hello! Agh I'm so sorry about that! I'll fix those soon. I never ended up finishing the original game due to my cat passing away last year and I haven't had the heart to continue (He was sitting next to me while I worked through it so it's been hard to touch)

I'm so sorry about these errors. I'll see if I can get around to fix it soon. :) Thanks for playing either way!

(1 edit)

Thank you so much for playing :) I appreciate it!

LMAO R I P I didn't realize how comical that came across I'll fix that in a bit! (Or maybe I won't let's see)

Thanks for pointing that out!

Hi there!! Thanks for wanting to play :)

Everything seems to be working on my end on different devices! Are the files just not appearing or is the website not giving you the option to download?

I haven't updated the game files in quite some time so they should be working but I'll look into it again when I'm home :) If the problem isn't resolved I can get you the download another way!

Hey there!

You need to adjust your security preferences to open the app :) I'll try to fix it for next update.

D-Did I just-- not respond to this?! I'm SO SO SORRY OMG!

This mean the world to me oh my goodness. I'm so glad it helped you! It was such a challenge to write about because it was so personal but I'm glad everybody really connected with it and could draw some reliability from it too <3 I'm so glad you liked Azreal!

I appreciate that you liked the lore haha there was a lot of symbolism in there, but there was a bit of research involved and I spent some time fleshing out the lore of the universe before I began.

Thank you so much <3 I'm so glad you enjoyed it and I appreciate taking the time to comment! And ahhh thank you ;; that means so much to me! Have an amazing day!

Hey there!

No offense taken! The only thing is that I've addressed this over my social media already, so I'll just re-iterate: made the game in a month during university and it was the first time I ever touched Renpy so I want to stress that it was by no means a complete project by any stretch of the imagination. I legitimately made it for fun and I wasn't really expecting it to be taken as seriously as it was. I strongly avoid kinetic since they're not my cup of tea honestly. However, I do regret the inclusion of Creed and Iris as love interests. The story of Paper Roses is meant to be the love story between Kira and Robin and I felt like I caved into thinking what other people wanted instead of what I wanted to do for a game that was largely made in celebration of my healing.

With that said, I've talked about remastering Paper Roses as a multiple-ending VN with Robin as the sole romantic interest for Kira.  Just as a side note, Creed and Iris's romance events were written in a few hours whereas Robin's was pre-written for almost half a year which is why there's such a lack of consistency so you're not wrong at all in saying that.

I hope you don't judge me based on the issues of this game! It was just an unpolished little taste of a story I loved dearly that I made in a limited amount of time. I hope to remake it someday now that I'm in school for game design but for now I'm really glad you enjoyed the concept and parts of it! I appreciate your investment in the game enough to provide your feedback. I didn't think anyone really wanted to see this game as polished so perhaps I'll revisit it someday soon!
