Good question! Depending on your region, you can buy or pledge for a physical copy at Cardboard Monster:
https://cardboard.monster/products/sunderwald

The Kickstarter (pre-campaign) link is now live at:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/longtailgames/tiny-tome

Very good questions!

The specific bleed / colour requirements will depend on the exact printer (which isn't yet confirmed). However, they will be passed onto contributors if they would like to make changes prior to production.

Page numbers actually won't be added (is my current thought)! This is partly why the games are presented in alphabetical order.

Here we are! It seems like the Tiny Tome single-page RPG jam was only just launched, and now it's time to announce the selected games.

We received 113 games from 174 participants who collectively made 1,989 ratings on the collection. That's roughly 50% larger than the initial Tiny Tome jam, and I'm stoked to see the community growing.

It was a (ridiculously) difficult process but the list of selected games has now been prepared.

I want to thank everybody who took part in the jam. Selected contributors will receive an email shortly with the next steps as we head into the Kickstarter!

Happy gaming.

Good question! I did think about linking the project to ZineQuest, but ultimately it wasn't a natural fit for that. So there will be no change to the intended campaign dates.

Correct!

Unfortunately, it won't be possible to accept games submitted after the jam has ended. I'm really sorry about the lack of clarity, and will do more to make the deadline clearer on future jams!

Just to clarify / confirm, there are two windows for selected games to be updated: January (before the prototype is printed) and March (before the final product is printed). This is entirely up to the contributor if they would like to make final modifications.

Honestly nobody knows exactly what Kickstarter is planning to do with their blockchain implementation. This means the fears cover everything from cryptocurrency implementation (with its associated carbon footprint), to an attempt to dodge regulation (with the idea that the blockchain is 'ungovernable') and NFT implementation (with its obvious grift and ponzi-scheme economics).

Maybe I was naive, but I've personally lost a lot of faith in Kickstarter based purely on their lack of information about this whole shift. A lot of people depend on this platform to pay the rent - and none of them know what's happening, why, or when.

Good question! Games will be selected based on their current condition, which means everything should be ready to go to print when submitted. The idea is that Long Tail has no expectation or requirement for chosen contributors to do any additional work whatsoever.

However, once the games are selected, there are two windows in which the files can be updated: January (before the prototype is printed) and March (before the final product is printed). This is entirely up to the contributor if they would like to make final modifications.

So basically people are very welcome to make 'alpha' submissions to the jam, with the intention to update the game before production. However, the selection process cannot take these planned updates into account, and will be made based entirely on the games as they currently stand. I hope that helps!

That's a very good question! The terms will be updated in future to make this clearer. The agreement should be terminated in the event that your submission is not selected. In that case there would be no ongoing arrangement (although even under the terms of the agreement, Long Tail is only granted non-exclusive rights, which means contributors are always completely free to sell or do anything they want with the game).

Sorry for not including this important detail on the main jam page! Yes, I had planned for it to be only English. This is mostly because I don't have the skills to determine which games to include otherwise.

However, there is a bit of flexibility in that last part. If there is a game that (for some reason) can be engaged with and enjoyed by someone who doesn't speak the language, then it would certainly be welcome in the jam. It's hard to imagine what that could be, but maybe something that is very simple and primarily visual (which could be fun for the player to translate) or where the language divide is part of the game (such as Spanish on one side, and English on the other).

All this is to say that the audience is considered primarily English-speaking, so if you have a game they can enjoy, it's certainly welcome in the jam.

If the series continues in the future I would love to branch into different languages - but this will require some collaboration as I don't have those skills myself.

At the moment Kickstarter has only announced '2022' as the switch to blockchain, so I'm not sure exactly when that will be. However, the campaign for Tiny Tome will definitely be in February. I suspect this will be before the switch occurs but can't be certain. I completely understand it's a tough decision at the moment so please let me know if you have any other questions and I'll try to be as helpful as possible!

This article is a pretty good round-up of the issues from the perspective of tabletop games on Kickstarter:  https://www.dicebreaker.com/companies/kickstarter/news/kickstarter-blockchain-cr...

Honestly nobody knows exactly what Kickstarter is planning to do with their blockchain implementation. Sorry to hear that but again I completely understand your decision. I actually plan on moving Long Tail completely onto Gamefound as soon as the current projects are finished. More information:

Sad to hear that but I completely understand. Please see this link for more information:

You may have noticed the recent announcement from Kickstarter re: blockchain.

It sucks and I don't like it.

However, unless something changes (and Kickstarter actually releases a lot more detail about the shift), I am planning to crowdfund Tiny Tome with Kickstarter. I completely understand if folks want to remove their game from this project, and now is the time to do so.

That's right. If a game is selected, creators will have an opportunity to resize (and make any final changes) before it goes into print. If you're not able to resize, it will be done by Long Tail by simply scaling. In fact, this is the only modification we are allowed to make to the work.

There isn't a clear answer here, sorry.

Games are certainly welcome to be submitted in any size, but part of the selection criteria is "How easy will it be to print?" So, while it is an advantage to be A5 already, this isn't absolutely necessary (especially if it's already a similar format such as A4).

That's a good question (and I don't really know itch.io well enough to give the best answer).

In your case, I think providing the preview image of the full game is enough.

At the moment every contributor is limited to a single (double-sided) page, which means that wouldn't be possible in this edition. This may change in future editions though. Or maybe you could provide a link for people to download and print the extra page?

Sorry about the confusion! The licensing terms are linked at the section where you submit the game. I will add them to the main jam page though.

Good question! Just like Tiny Library there will be 50 games selected.

Voting starts when the jam finishes (at the end of December) when everyone will have a week to decide which should be included. It will be here in itch.

That's a very good question!

The contributors themselves are able to vote on which games should be included in the book. This is used as the basis for my selection process, where I try to find a good spread of different ideas, styles, and backgrounds. I will also rule out games that have print or legibility issues.

Hopefully that helps :)

Sorry for the confusion! That's right - there's a question when you submit about how the page should be presented (left+right spread or front+back). I will add it to the jam page as a couple of people have asked this.

Thanks for getting in touch! Sorry about the confusion.

The print and play is setup for single-side printing. Then you have both sides of each card printed once, and they just need to be cut out and placed in a card sleeve (maybe along with a real card to make the whole thing strong).

Does that make sense? I'm here to help if you have more questions!

Hello folks,

I want to thank everybody for their interest in the project. We had a bunch of amazing entries and it wasn't easy to select the 50 designs to move into physical production. If you haven't received an email or message, it means your submission wasn't chosen this time (although I hope to launch more in future).

Looking ahead, I'm excited to say the Tiny Library crowdfunding campaign will launch in a few weeks! You can sign up to be notified on the Kickstarter page.

The interest so far has been really strong, including a nice article on Dicebreaker, and some reviews to come in August.

I'll keep everyone updated here as the campaign continues :)

Any luck? I haven't received an email yet.

Yooo how can I contact you :)

I sent you an email :)

So... how can I see this entry?

Hello folks,

Another potential contributor got in contact to raise an important point, which I always wanted to cover in the original contract but simply forgot. So I'm very happy this was noticed in time!

Once the jam is over I will contact the selected contributors with finalized terms for agreement.

The following changes have been made:

  • [1.1] ... Use of the Works means the exercise of any of the exclusive rights of a copyright owner in relation to the Works...
  • [1.1] ... Use of the Works means the exercise of any of the non-exclusive rights of a copyright owner in relation to the Works...

***

  • [2.1] In consideration of the payments made to the Artist under this agreement, the Artist grants the Licensee an exclusive licence for the Use the Works for any purpose the Licensee deems appropriate.
  • [2.1] In consideration of the payments made to the Artist under this agreement, the Artist grants the Licensee a non-exclusive licence for the Use the Works for any purpose the Licensee deems appropriate.

***

So the terms now grant Long Tail Games the non-exclusive use of your design.

This means you remain completely free to keep your game on Itch, sell it as a digital or physical product, or even sell the design to another publisher (however, you will not be able to sell exclusive rights to another publisher, as this agreement precludes them being granted).

I hope the terms are clear, but please feel free to get in touch here or anywhere else (ash@long-tail.games) if you have questions, comments or suggestions.

Thanks again for joining Tiny Library. It'll be fun, I promise!

Hello folks,

Thanks so much for your interest in Tiny Library! I'm excited for the submission window to end so I can really dig into the entries.

For now, I just want to highlight some changes that have been made to the standard contract after they were flagged by a potential contributor.  Once the jam is over I will contact the selected contributors with finalized terms for agreement.

The following changes have been made:

  • [8.4] Licensee shall be entitled, but not obligated, to exploit the license under this agreement under their own publishing label. However, Licensee will use different channels of exploitation if suitable. The Artist hereby gives prior general consent to any kind of adaptations, modifications, alterations or rearrangements necessary for those kinds of exploitations.
  • [8.4] Licensee shall be entitled, but not obligated, to exploit the license under this agreement under their own publishing label. However, Licensee will use different channels of exploitation if suitable.

***

  • [7.1] The title, design, format and parts of the Works are left to the discretion of Licensee and/or eventual sub-licenses. The Artist may make suggestions to Licensee, which will be reasonably considered by Licensee. Licensee is not obligated to adhere to Artist suggestions. Licensee shall be entitled to file and acquire any kind of intellectual or industrial property right as to the title, rules, parts/format and design/layout of the Works.
  • [7.1] The title, design, format and parts of the Works may not be modified by the Licensee and/or eventual sub-licenses. However, the scale and size of the Works may be modified for manufacturing purposes. Licensee shall be entitled to file and acquire any kind of intellectual or industrial property right as to the title, rules, parts/format and design/layout of the Works.

***

  • [8.2] Licensee is completely free in all business matters and decisions concerning the Work. With respect to the best commercialization of the Work, Licensee shall further be entitled to translate and adapt the Works in other languages, dialects, versions or wording, if necessary, in the different countries of the contractual territory.
  • [8.2] Licensee is completely free in all business matters and decisions concerning the Work.

***

  • [6.1] The Licensee must pay the Artist: (a) 1% of the sale price of each item created by the Licensee by Use of the Works (Item), minus production costs, to be sent quarterly. (b) 1 free prototype copy of the Item.
  • [6.1] The Licensee must pay the Artist: (a) 1% of the sale price of each item created by the Licensee by Use of the Works (Item), minus production costs, to be sent quarterly. (b) 1 free prototype copy of the Item, with postage and shipping paid by the Licensee

***

  • [6.2 - Addition]
  • [6.2] The Licensee must provide the Artist with royalty statements and pay royalties under clause 6.1.a within 30 calendar days of the end of every quarter during the Term. Those statements must show: the number of Items; the number of Items sold; the sale price of the Item; the production costs of the Items; and the amount owing to the Artist under this agreement for the past quarter.

***

The basic impact of these changes is that Long Tail Games (or any other future publisher of Tiny Library) will not be able to change the games in any meaningful way (the only modification allowed is scaling / resizing to fit cards).

I hope the terms are clear, but please feel free to get in touch here or anywhere else (ash@long-tail.games) if you have questions, comments or suggestions.

Thanks again for joining Tiny Library. It'll be fun, I promise!
