What am I supposed to do? :/
I'm trying to use the knife on the pink symbols, but nothing's happening. What are the controls?
Very interesting idea! The only thing I am not fully sure about is how it would cater to those who are likely colourblind. Colour has some strong functionality here. Is there a way to design it such that we can very easily tell what resource pertains to what mechanic without involving colour exclusively?
I mean... if "keep politics out of video games!" is the occasional battle-cry from angry Gamers on social media, then where exactly does "trauma in video games" land on that spectrum?
This here is the very reason I think most games and the stories they can tell are severely limited. The notion that we cannot tell stories because of fear of it being politically or traumatically charged is ridiculous and should be written out. It's getting old.
We need more games that aren't afraid of going beyond the norm. This post is very valid, thank you for writing it.
The idea of having an Accountability Jam is neat. If a Discord server exists (which it doesn't right now, based on the FAQ), then folks can get together and make games. It makes the accountability feel stronger, and it helps push some of us in the right direction with our projects, especially during playtests. Any chance there's going to be one?
Just saw this, you should definitely continue it! There's always something to innovate on, always something to change a little bit. Creativity is all about taking what exists and putting a different twist to it.
It's okay if it's been done before, just look at what such games do and don't do well and you will make an interesting game. That's the beauty of game design.
Good luck!
What an enjoyable write-up! I remember writing something similar for one of my monthly email writing prompts. Drastically different tones and settings, but how the story unfolds in the eyes of the robot protagonist is flat-out similar here. It was super difficult to do so, but now that I think of it, the small change from robot to cyborg does add more compulsion and creative freedom in directing the narrative, thanks to the still-human nature present, and the engaging mystery-thriller aspects are testament to that. Great inspiration for future robot stories. :)
I did run into a bug where checking system recovery would end up with me not having any options. That meant I had to restart from scratch. I'll give the story another retry sometime this evening. But overall, I love what I played through!
This game felt rather straightforward... until my 2nd playthrough. Made me go 'ooohhh' like Timon & Pumbaa. I walked right into that one, didn't I?
Great write-up! I also especially love how you amalgamated the traversal mechanics and images to recreate something similar to the old-school text-based adventures.
It's a relaxing game for me. I didn't engage myself too much into it, but that's what I love about it.
The only drawback are the aesthetics and the lack of music. I think both can be crafted to better suit the relaxing atmosphere of the game.
It's my most favourite game. ^_^ Can't wait to add it to my phone.
