I really like the little hop he does upon defeating an enemy. This is a really cool start and has a lot going on. Great work!

Cool idea and super many mechanics.

It's fun and I like the rouglike character.

Maybe you should focus on less mechanics next time.

All in all a good work. This would definitely have potential to work on even more.

Developer

Just wanna say thanks to everyone for the honest and frankly mostly positive input!~

I've participated in a few gamejams at this point but never really received as much interaction/input as this. Just wanna say a special thank you all for your time!!

it was a bit hard to control the player, like holding the shield up took some time. I liked the idea and the gameplay. nice game.

Developer(+1)

I totally agree, I'm actively working on refining the movement and response to controls overall, I totally should've spent more time making sure movement worked & wasn't so stiff!! πŸ’€

Thank you for taking the time to play, and today I've already taken your input into account and fixed some bugs! I'll be uploading the changes after the jam, but it turns out the block key was sometimes not being read in the first place, or getting stuck as active!! πŸ˜“

Again, thank you so much for taking the time to play my game and give some input!! πŸ˜€I'm workin on fixing everything and hope to earn the level of positive input i've received so far! xD

Nice job! Liked the way you've worked with the theme, with the evolution after death.

I think if you keep working in this project, soon you'll have a incredible roguelike!!

Developer

Thank you! I made a few notes of what I might make for each theme before it was chosen, and in the end this was the concept I THOUGHT I'd be able to finish... πŸ˜…clearly I didn't quite get there!

However,  I'm so happy you agree that there's at least room to grow, and I fully intend to keep working on this project! Thank you for playing and for taking the time to play and give such positive feedback! 🀩

Some really good ideas well executed in this game! Looks like this would've been really tough to program the key elements of the game. Would like to see a little more recoil after getting an attack blocked, I feel like dodging is a much better option in the game's current state.

The beginnings of a great game for sure! Keep up the good work!

Developer(+1)

It was a little tough, I can safely say I made it harder on myself than I needed it to be, I was streaming & designing a chatbot alongside working on it!! xD

I've actually already taken your input into account and added a recoil animation today which auto-plays after a strike is blocked, and it already feels much better to block something! So thanks a bunch for the input, and for playing!

Submitted

Oh wow, nicely done! I'll definitely try it again with the recoil in after the jam!

Great submission! I do like the start of your character controller, you could use this as a base and build upon it to make a great player system with perhaps some finer aim control or something along the lines. You do have a lot of mechanics packed in here and did a great job putting it together!

Developer

Thank you so much for the positive review! I know there's obviously there's a TON to jab at in my overall design..  And I'm thankful you, saw the roots of good in it all.. πŸ˜…I worked probably a bit too hard on feature design and didn't take nearly enough time to smooth everything out and develop the world and embellish things.. xD

Fortunately the time after the game jam's closure is unlimited, relative to how long my human body's HP remains above 0!! So I've got plenty of time to, as you said, to "use this as a base to build upon to make a great player system!!"

pretty fun, wish there was way to block unless i missed it or get a away after hitting enemy, i felt like rolling was too slow to use after swinging. Gates also hard to get through. i felt like the puzzles didnt really add to the gameplay, i just wanted to skip it really. i do like the quick game loop and upgrades. I think game is a good base that can be expanded on

Developer(+1)

Thank you for taking the time to play it! :) I actually have the hotkeys listed both on the front-page of the game, and on the little signs you spawn next to, so in this case you missed the blocking mechanic! πŸ˜…Definitely not your fault though, I didn't have any tutorial or anything so it's understandable to skip over things like that. C is also not the most intuitive hotkey for blocking, i will admit.

I also ran into some mild collision issues with the doorways between the fences, I think it's an issue with friction resulting in the player just getting caught up on the collider, and it's something I'll absolutely be fixing very soon.

And as for the puzzles, i designed the mechanics for them early on, and then didn't actually give myself enough time to do some level design and make them an actually cohesive part of the game. And honestly looking at how it relates (or absolutely doesn't) to the combat, I can definitely understand how they would be something a player would just want to skip, and I hope to turn them into a more cohesive and enjoyable part of the game in time!

I appreciate the honesty in your review, and I'm glad you at least enjoyed the overall loop! Thank you for your time and thoughts!

Jam Host

Hi, I noticed your submission is missing source folders. Your source is everything someone needs to download your game, open it in the game engine, and hit Play to play the game. In your case, your source is missing the Assets, Packages, and ProjectSettings folders. Here is an example of what your source should look like: https://github.com/icepol/DeathIsOnlyTheBeginning

Developer

Ahhhhhh ok, I thought by "Source" y'all meant... source code? Not project files. Definition issues... πŸ˜…I'll get that updated right away

Jam Host

It looks good now :)

Developer

Awesome, sorry you have to spend so much time going around and reminding all of us how to submit things properly!! πŸ˜‚πŸ€£

Developer

Updated the link to source code because I accidentally posted a line of code from my music system 2 minutes before pushing because I'm a TOTAL PRO AT THIS πŸ˜…πŸ˜…πŸ˜…(also it's not open source it's just a reference as per terms of the game jam)

This game doesn't have the best look to it. But I'm just a really big fan of rogue-likes. The mechanics were a little rough too. But I couldn't help but enjoy myself. The game was very fun.

Developer(+1)

First off, thank you very much for your time playing, and for your honest input!!

I actually agree 100% about looks, mechanics, AND love of rogue-likes. I had 0 planning overall for the genre of the game beyond some notes i loosely took based off themes before the vote on the game jam's theme. The game itself just happened to end up being somewhere within the rougelike-esque genre!! xD I guess I play too much of those lately πŸ˜…

I'm so thankful that the first comment on my entry included "I couldn't help but enjoy myself." To me, that alone is more than enough to consider the whole experience worth-while. I enjoyed myself making it, and I really couldn't be happier to know someone else had fun playing it!

To address the negatives you quite accurately pointed out, yes, the game is absolutely a jank-fest.  Clunky rolling, attacks feel stiff, blocking as well..  Honestly, if I dare to claim a firmly positive outcome, the interaction is the cleanest part of the game. And even THAT is limited... Even the load-screen's text output gets CRAZY text sometimes.πŸ˜…But all of these things can and WILL be resolved with time, and I'm so thankful they're the main glaring issues because they're ones I can solve. (unlike a BORING GAME 😭😭😭)

Thank you again for playing, and taking the time to share your thoughts!!
