The Good:

  • Concept - liked that you could teleport to different blocks and retain your height. It allowed for some pretty interesting decision making
  • Game polish - didn't manage to find any bugs and the controls felt complete, I always ended up where I expected when I teleported
  • Art - I like giving higher scores to people who made the art from scratch as it makes development more time consuming. Well done on taking on the extra challenge

Could Improve:

  • Clarity - took me a while to figure out what killed me and that the boxes were actually bombs. It also would've been helpful for the older bombs to show up on top of the newer ones when they were stacked on each other. You did a good job on the spinning blades though, they give the player a heads up before they show up
  • Theme - didn't really feel like the game fit the theme that well. It was just another little mechanic, far from being central to the gameplay. For this game, I'm not really sure what you could've done differently though
  • Variety - I would've added more boxes with different interesting mechanics, maybe flipping the gravity, as an example. It would've added more replayability. (If you did add more boxes than the bombs and rewinds, then consider increasing their spawn rate because I didn't find any)

Overall:

A cute and fun game. Well done on making everything work correctly, and creating all of the assets yourself. The art fit the arcade style really well! However, I don't see myself replaying this game a lot, as there's not a lot of mechanics to explore. Consider adding more variety, if you plan on releasing the game on mobile.

That's what I call a great review.

I was aware problem with the bombs not looking like bombs, I have to rework them, definitely. Very cool that you noticed the spins. I didn't really think of stacking the boxes, but now that you mention it, it makes a lot of sense (although it requires some extra working).

The theme could have been boosted by changing the rewind boxes to a time-base rewind instead of order-based, maybe (but that would have taken more effort, of course).

I was thinking of improving replayability by theming the quadrants (the top could have 0 gravity, the bottom could be a hell) but I need to think about it. The flipping-gravity boxes (or even flipping gravity bombs) look like a good idea, thanks for that.

Thank you so much for your thorough review!

No problem! If you want to continue working on your game, you can scrap the rewind aspect of it and just focus on what makes the fun and what's necessary.
