Hello,

Have you noticed the entries of BASIC Jam #7? This jam is special! 3 BASIC dialect authors submitted their creative entries to the jam. They are:

RCBasic ( https://itch.io/jam/jam-for-all-basic-dialects-7/rate/4435569 )

BazzBasic ( https://itch.io/jam/jam-for-all-basic-dialects-7/rate/4397268 )

QBJS ( https://itch.io/jam/jam-for-all-basic-dialects-7/rate/4435183 )

The fact that three BASIC dialect authors themselves joined BASIC Jam #7 is quite a remarkable phenomenon in the indie development and retro‑coding community. Normally, game jams showcase what users can do with a language or engine, but here the creators of the dialects stepped in to compete alongside everyone else.

Why this matters?

1. Validation of their own tools: By building games in their own dialects, the authors demonstrate that their languages are not just theoretical projects but practical, creative tools. It’s a live proof‑of‑concept.

2. Community inspiration: Seeing the language creators participate can energize the community. It shows humility and passion — they’re not just maintaining codebases, they’re also game makers.

3. Cross‑pollination: Each dialect author’s entry highlights unique features of their language. Other developers can compare and learn, possibly even adopting or contributing to those dialects.

4. Historical significance: BASIC has a long tradition of being both accessible and diverse. Having dialect authors join a jam echoes the early days when language inventors also wrote demo programs to inspire users.

5. The broader impact is that this kind of participation blurs the line between toolmaker and tool user. It strengthens the ecosystem because it builds credibility for the dialects. Furthermore, it encourages dialogue between creators and users. Meanwhile, it makes the jam more than a contest. In fact, it becomes a showcase of language evolution.

In short, Jam #7 became not just a game jam but a living exhibition of BASIC dialect innovation, with the authors themselves stepping into the creative arena. It’s rare, and it sets a precedent for how niche programming communities can thrive when creators actively engage.

In my opinion, while authors rarely has enough time to create something special for Jams like this, it is a nice chance to show your dialect.

I agree with this completely.

Interestingly, game development was a major factor in the origin of QBJS.   It grew out of an effort to build a 2D game engine for QB64 (GX).  One of the experimental features that I included was an "Export to Web" option.   The goal of this feature was to make it easy to share games online without needing players to download an executable.  As it turned out though, there was more initial interest in this feature than in the game engine as a whole.  Long story short, QBJS spun off as its own project with the larger goal of providing QBasic in the browser with as much compatibility as feasible with QB4.5 and QB64 while providing near-native performance.

Regarding point 5 of your post, I definitely think that if someone wants to create tools for games, the best way to know how to build those tools and to know what game devs need... is to make games!

My guess: over 100 games after 3 years!)

QBJS singlehandedly inspired me to try gamedev

Hello! I see. Welcome!

Hello everyone...

While I am creating my own language and runtime to compliment it (AKA make it do useful stuff), it's not just quite there at the minute... Basically, I'm tidying up loose ends, sorting documentation for it, more testing needed to make sure all the systems play nice together, it's been a very big project, nearly killed me off, lol. So while I'll not be adding anything to this jam, the next one should be a go'er, and a bit of a good first test of what it can do! :)

Hi!

Is BambooBasic ready for jams? I notice that a new jam for BASIC enthusiasts will begin soon(Duration: Aug 1 – Aug 31). The new jam is hosted by the author of BazzBasic(https://ek-bass.itch.io/bazzbasic

The full details of the new jam can be found here: https://itch.io/t/6614044/flip-the-classic-jam-for-basic-programmers

(The background of the new jam:  https://itch.io/jam/jam-for-all-basic-dialects-7/topic/6603708/jam-8)

The theme of the new jam is nice and interesting. If you decide to join....good luck!!! Moreover, I hope that a creative and entertaining entry will be successfully made in your excellent and modern BambooBasic! Yeah!!!

Yeah, I'm putting one in, I already have something I can "anti", so half the work is done in that regard! :)

Hi,
Maybe these materials will be useful for you. Good luck anyway!

I am currently learning RCBasic, but seeing that the BASIC scene is very much alive, I wish I came back sooner 😆
