I even had a plan to add "lore pages" that randomly blew through the wind with some of the lore in the form of newspaper fragments etc, the mailbox mechanic was meant to be actual character sprites that walked on the road and you had to catch them before they left and they would give quests (Small tasks like finding a lost shoe for example the blew past and rewarded you with money)

I totally get that! Scope is super hard to keep control over especially when you may not be sure how long each element will take to make.
And hey, even with all of that on the cutting room floor, it's still a cohesive whole!
