Damn, great work Gensun! I got both Neutral and Best endings. The game was on the easier side but I don't mind that for a jam, story was kinda cute, art was stunning, combat didn't feel overwhelming, enemies were funny. Music slapped hard for no reason haha.
Nothing to dislike here I think.
Three things I liked about this game:
Three things I did not like:
Overall a very strong entry! I'm just sad that I couldn't get to the end due to the Banish training bug.
Nice classic CTB battle system! Satisfying to be able to feed Harold all of my stat gummies and he became an OP lightning-charged enemy-delaying speed god!
Graphics: 5 - Really nice, coherent visuals! The character designs were simple, but clean and sharp. I also loved the little animations, weird enemies and the environments. Great job developing all these assets over such a short time period!
Sound: 4 - The tracks were catchy and memorable, suiting the game well. Other sound work was straightforward without much fanfare, but things weren't out of place or anything.
Story: 3 - An interesting choice of narrative that follows Harold as a Christ-like figure who gathers apostles and performs miracles while defying expectations. I quite liked the concept, it's an extremely clever take on the jam's conceit. The actual dialogue (outside of Lucius) is quite dry, functional but not offensive. The two endings weren't really a satisfying conclusion to the game but I did like the portrayal of the antagonist as little more than a bully first and foremost.
Comedy: 2 - The enemies made me smile! I'm not sure I understood the deal with Lucius - I didn't hate him though.
Gameplay: 2 - I think navigating the town is pretty neat, as well as the node map. The combat is quite pretty but mechanically very weak. ATB is a personal dislike of mine so I might be biased, but with the way you acquire resources the whole thing is broken open almost as soon as you start.
That said, the combat also doesn't waste your time and is over very quickly, so it was at the very least not painful.
Overall: 4 - A very good entry. The combat is a miss but the execution of everything else is decent to great. Good job!
I rated this highly in most categories though I did have some issues (I didn't see the warning and softlocked my game re-training Fred, thankfully had saved right before; then during my second attempt at Vice the message window was stuck at 1 line tall lol).
I really like the concept! "Where's Harold" in a like, religious sense is pretty neat. The art was nice too.
After dying a second time to Vice even with tinfoil hats and such I gave up, especially since I seemed to be stuck with the message window bug.
Will probably take a look at your other games since I liked the vibe overall.
oh i also had to give sound a 5 cuz i use ayato sound create in my own projects hahahaha
Warning to everyong playing this, there is a softlock in the game. When you unlock the campsite, this is avoidable if you select 'train' with each character the first time you talk to them, and they must be level 7!
You watched me play this live, but here are my ratings!
Overall: 4 - Maybe a 5! I really really liked this! The graphics are phenomenal and the music was extremely catchy! The weaker elements are the story, gameplay, and comedy, but there's nothing in it that's *bad* other than the unfortunate softlock.
Graphics: 4 - It's the same art style as MILK Quest but the whole vibe works really well here! I love the urban vibes, the flourishes on the overworld, the animations, there's just a ton of great detail here. Easily a highlight entry!
Music: 4 - MAN talk about catchy! I imagine this is all royalty free music, but the hip hop soundtrack with the pianos and funky rhythms had me bobbing along the whole time. Super duper good shit!
Story: 3 - The writing is good, the characters are likeable, and I liked the themes about religion and belief and all that! It wasn't incredibly poignant or anything and I wasn't able to see the end unfortunately, but good work here.
Comedy: 3 - I got a couple laughs, everyone had a chance to shine and Lucius was especially funny. I appreciate the kind of humour that's spread all over not just in dialogue but descriptions and enemies too.
Gameplay: 3 - Cool concepts, but it's bogged down a decent bit by balance issues, especially with CTB causing speed to completely overtake any balance. Stunlocking enemies with Therese and Lucius is fun though.
