Our programmers did it all with 2D colliders - and 2D rigidbodies, limiting the rotation of the 3D rings. There are 2D colliders on the left and right side of a ring and a trigger collider in the middle. This enables the rings to slide onto the colliders of the pikes and then the trigger triggers the timer/scoring!

The colliders actually are there that the rings only go on hooks but not into each other or the spinner. The on Hook state is just a trigger collider around the hook that checks if a ring's center y is above the hook's position and it's x position is inside the hook's width range.
