Description
I have some friends who are currently making a game about a witch solving puzzles in a dessert landscape. When they asked me to make music for their game, they asked for Bossa Nova Jazzy style music so I took this opportunity to practice during the jam.

The track representations are very simple since I wanted to focus on making the music as enjoyable as possible first and formeost. So the themes of the tracks are up for discretion by the listener.

I composed the tracks starting with the bass line and chords because I wanted to make sure I had a solid foundation before I basically freestyled melodies as if it were a Jazz improv session.

Message from the artist
WATCH IT ON YOUTUBE!
My friends made an incredibly pretty video to go along with my music and I highly recommend watching it!

Theme

Freedom

How does it fit the theme?
I like to focus on the orchestration techniques when it comes to theming, and what is more free than improv?

I wanted these tracks to feel like they had improvisational elements like a real jazz club would have.

Lots of off rhythm syncopation with a really funky bassline to compliment every instrument to its fullest, allowing them to be free with their voicings.

As a secondary element to the theming, The story of the music is that you are in a Jazz club that offers free desserts to all patrons. Free desserts? Sounds like the best kind of freedom to me!

So... ok... It's ironic that I left your post, Jofes, "for the sweetest", heh

Gelato Vibrato - This song made me really want to get up from my chair and go to the kitchen... And so, at 0:42 I open the fridge... AND IT'S EMPTY! HORROR! Anyway, the rest of the track I'm running around my room and trying to get dressed as quickly as possible so I can run to the store for donuts... Heh

Strawberry Jam - This music makes me want to walk the streets... The thing is, the store where I usually get donuts is closed. I'll have to walk with a stylish gait along the streets of my beloved Kazakhstan to find a store with really tasty donuts...

Any Bakers Dozen - I found a donut shop! I managed to grab the donut that I really wanted to eat as quickly as possible! But I need to urgently and as quickly as possible run away from the evil saleswoman who wants to open my skull as punishment for stealing... The rest of the track I'm RUNNING AWAY FROM A FAT LADY WITH A ROLLING PIN!...

...and at the very end - she throws a rolling pin at me, I fall off a bridge into a river, smash my skull on the rocks and die...

...

...

...

...with a donut in my teeth

HEH!

Thank you so much for the fun story!

I really appreciate all the effort you put into these stories and I had read some of them on other posts so I'm delighted to get one myself!

I really appreciate that you packaged it all into one video with some sweet graphics (great friends of yours!! My favorite has to be Any Baker's Dozen because it had me feeling pumped and like some kind of mystery was awaiting to be solved, as if someone had stolen the 13th cupcake! Seriously amazing job, I love vibrant, pop-esque takes on jazz, and this hits it home.

thank you so much!

Any bakes dozen was my favorite to make and I had hoped it would be others favorite as well so I’m glad that seems to be the case!

Very  catchy bass line, top on with brass are great idea! That tempo change in Any Bakers Dozen also Impressed. Your signature on this set is remarkable.

Thanks!

I'm glad you liked it!

This is really great! The bass provides a very groovy and solid structure all throughout which I really like here. The jazz structure as a whole is incredibly well written, I like how you've incorporated the solos especially. I like the clarinet vibrato you've added here as well, I see some others may have been opposed to it but I think it is great for jazz! Honestly the whole soundtrack feels pretty game ready! If I had to provide a criticism (although not really a criticism at the same time), I really like how the kick adds a solid beat and I think it fits well into what you've made, although I think when you compose more, I think a clave rhythmic foundation/motif for the kick (which isn't essential for the genre, a four on the floor rhythmic foundation works just fine, but it) could really bring out the bossa nova feeling even more! I imagine the intended goal of the kick was probably to get people dancing though haha! Nicely done with this!

thank you so much!

I remember when I was starting out writing the music for this, I tried giving the bass drum a different rhythm which I usually do for all my other music and it just wasn’t working like I’d hoped. I think it’s because I had the bass part so much more complex and quick that made the bass feel really weird if it wasn’t 4 normal beats.

Yes, that's completely understandable (especially in a short time limit)! I do want to emphasize I still really like what you have now and think it fits well for what you want to achieve; It reminds me a bit on how bossa nova/jazz influence is conveyed in certain game tracks like "Coconut Mall" for example!

You were able to get a good variety of moods and vibes while keeping consistent with orchestration and genre. You've got a good foundation for your next project! Make sure you spend a lot of time messing around with the MIDI and synth preset settings for your solos so they sound as lively and full of energy as possible. Accent some notes, throw in some vibrato on held notes, get some different samples of each instrument being played in different ways (staccato vs, legato, trumpets with mutes, etc.). Great work, and good luck!

something that I learned how to during the creation process of the jam was how to use automation on non FLstudio plugins.

Before, if I wanted to put a mute on the SWAM trumpet for example, I would have to add an entire extra plugin to accomplish that. But now that I’ve learned how to automate those kinds of things, I think I will mess around with those settings a lot more.

Without needing to dedicate an entire extra plugin for simple differences my computer will be much happier from less stress and me much happier from lower load times.

Really surprising and fun ahah, I like the uniqueness and the creativity around it, good job !

That tempo change in Any Bakers Dozen made me groove hard. Amazing work!

Keep it up; you'll do great with your friends' game.

Thank you!

I'm looking forwards to making more music for the game!
