Loved the title screen and the UI. A lot of care and consideration was poured into it and it shows! The mouse pointer is a really nice touch too.

So much world building going on too! It’s obvious this is just a tiny snippet of a story from the main epic. Definitely get a sense of something much grander happening.

The art is really great. Particularly (what I’m presuming is) Kyle’s art. Some real pro looking stuff there. I didn’t exactly love that the parents were just silhouettes. They seemed like main enough characters to warrant detailed sprites. But maybe this was intentional for a reason I didn’t pick up on. Or maybe it was a victim of time constraints. It didn’t hurt the experience too much. Just felt a little odd to me.

Music was really nice and fitting. Sound effects were great too.

The chase sequences were super effective with all the motion. But I really didn’t like the ‘trial and error’ nature of it. Personally I feel this approach kind of deflates all the tension and makes the sections a bit tedious and chore like. It might have been better if the player had 3 chances before dying and game over. Or maybe there was a visual cue to look out for that suggested which way was the right way to go. Also, on my laptop the framerate absolutely tanked during those scenes and it wasn’t actually obvious it was time based. So sometimes I was failing thinking I had gone the wrong way which led to a lot of confusion when retrying. Not that me playing on an older laptop is the game’s fault in any way.

Arrgh, sorry to focus so much on the complaint, I imagine you probably got a lot of feedback about that, and I don’t want to add to any negativity too much. It’s good that the ‘difficulty level’ option was implemented.

All in all, awesome effort by the team. Well done!

Loved the game! I guess I got the true end, as Nox gave her his cape? The art was great, all around it, from the UI design to the amazing characters and backgrounds! Music offered a nice companionship allong the journey, and the sfx really enhanced the experience of the different scenes! Writting and plot were flawless too, and very enjoyable!

Hope to see a sequel, or a chapter two someday. Great job!

Quite a high level of polish for a one-month game! I like the rough texturing on the sprites. The music is really good. As a chemist myself, I appreciate that you obviously did your research on all the alchemy parts. The overall look-and-feel is very holistic and shows a great attention to detail. I would lose the prologue, though--prologues are on the outs, and it doesn't tell us anything we need to know to understand the story.

Thanks a lot for playing our game! We're really happy to know you enjoyed it!! 🥰🌸

As for the reason why we decided to make the game a prologue, it's mainly because it's part of a much bigger story and one month wouldn't have been enough to cover everything. So we opted for a prologue/prequel that immersed players into the world.

Well, I'll look forward to the whole thing! Be sure to check out my entry too: https://itch.io/jam/spooktober-vn-jam-2022/rate/1690696

I already played this one when I saw the post-mortem, but I did replay parts of it now to be able to write this feedback a bit more in detail since memories do fade a bit, especially when it comes to remembering details that weren’t the main things I noticed about each VN.

Introduction: I notice that there’s an introoduction before the main menu, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but the way it shows a bunch of text at a pre-set speed which could be much faster or slower than a particular player’s reading speed. Read too slow and you’ll miss things, read too fast and… okay, I can speed it up by pressing enter over and over, but there isn’t a button to just skip to the main menu if I know I’ve already watched the whole introduction a previous time. I think such a button, and maybe a way to pause or rewatch the introduction (and I don’t mean closing and reopening the VN) would be a welcome addition.

Writing: I think the story and the way it’s written is good, but the issue with the introduction does mean I didn’t exactly get the best possible first impression from that.

Theme: Monsters? Vampires? I think you got that one. (Figuring out which entries from this jam fit the Halloween theme best is gonna be tough because I don’t really think I’ve come across any that didn’t use it well… I do think most of them did better at that than mine, but that doesn’t really help me compare them to each other.)

Audio: There’s sound effects, several pieces of music, and the different pieces of music do suit each other without sounding like they’re the just same piece on different instrument. I think the music is pretty good at reinforcing the mood of the story without distracting from the text.

Art: There seems to be some pretty good backgrounds and also some pretty good sprites (I can tell that some sprites were maybe made faster than others, but it’s not really an issue). And Lacrima’s eyes blink from time to time. The art seems pretty polished. Even the GUI art seems to have plenty of work put into it.

Fun: The puzzles are fun, solving them quickly maybe not that much, but you’ve made that part optional (even made the puzzles optional), and I imagine different people might like the different difficulty settings. And the story is interesting too.

My favourite part: the art keeping a consistent look, with everything looking like someone put effort into making it look good.

My least favourite part: The introduction being based on timed events rather than having people read it at their own pace, and the fact that it isn’t skippable but also can only be replayed by closing and reopening the VN.

Hi! Thanks for playing and all of your feedback! 🌸

Regarding the introduction before the main menu, there actually is a skip button on the top right of the screen that appears after you see it for the first time. As for the reading speed, I'll take note of it to lower it a little on an update, thanks for pointing it out!

Happy to know you liked the story, art and overall audio!

Really enjoyed the setting the atmosphere.

The menu UI is gorgeous as are the sprites and general art. You even had a custom mouse cursor!

Also the use of sound and music was absolute top-notch.

The characters are all very likeable  and I would love to learn more about this world.

Personally, I am a bit wary of time-based events like the running away scenes, as it can be an accessibility concern. Plus certain players just want to enjoy the story and dislike gamification elements. Of course, it absolutely valid if you tried to recreate the "dark souls" feeling of death lurking at every corner and I think that worked out very well but you might want to be aware that some players will miss out on your great story telling then. Maybe an "easy mode" or the option to skip these parts would be nice.

Thank you for making this game.

Thank you so much for playing our game!! We're very happy you enjoyed it!!! 💕🥰

So glad to hear you liked the UI, art, and audio so much!! Will be sure to let everyone on the team know!! 🥰❤️

"The characters are all very likeable  and I would love to learn more about this world." --> Asdhjgbsdghb this makes me so happy as a writer, I'll do my best in the continuation!! 💪

Your concern about the quick time events is totally valid!! The main reason why we wanted to add them was so that the game wasn't solely a kinetic novel and had some kind of gameplay, since there weren't any traditional visual novel choices, but it's true that quick time events are not everyone's cup of tea and they can be a hit or miss 🤔

Your 'easy mode' option is actually a very good idea! I think for future games we could implement a way to skip the puzzle games altogether for those who are having trouble with them or just want to skip them to continue the story 💪

Thank you so much for the feedback!! ❤️

A very fun little fantasy VN with some unexpectedly-clever navigation puzzles thrown in. I would say the ending is abrupt, but given the game's page explicitly states this a prologue to a much bigger story, the abruptness is apt for its purpose.

The game doesn't feel like something made in a month - it feels like a professionally-made product! The art, writing, music...it all has a level of polish I would never expect out of a game jam game. Bravo!!

Developer(+1)

AAAAHHHH THAT'S SO SWEET OF YOU, thank you for giving our game a try and sharing your thoughts!!! 😭❤️  So happy to know you enjoyed it!! 💕

As for the ending, that's completely fair, it does end a bit abrupt! As the writer, I would have liked to polish it further but given the deadline I didn't want to risk it, just in case. For the bigger story, I'll do my best so that the ending is more fleshed out and developed 💪

"The game doesn't feel like something made in a month - it feels like a professionally-made product!" -->  THIS MADE MY DAY SKGBKSBGKBG, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

As predicted, I loved it ^-^ It's very beautiful and dreamlike. All of the art is so pretty, the story is engaging with a lovely mixture of cute and humourous moments alongside darker themes (also I don't wanna spoil anything, but loving the references, hehe.) The music is enchanting (I'm actually sitting with the game still open on the main menu as I type this because it's a very relaxing tune!)

I got a bad end first pretty early on, haha. Admittedly, I'm one of those people who detests quick-time events in all games, especially VNs >.< but that's a personal preference thing! And I can't even moan about it because it was done really well + I'd be a hypocrite since I've put them in some of my games xD I just like to be able to sit and relax when I'm playing a VN, so I generally don't like anything in a VN that isn't just reading x3 It wasn't tooooo intrusive though, so I didn't get annoyed or anything with it, and I do really love the way it's animated :3

I think I've managed to unlock everything in the gallery. I do have a few favourite images, but I won't say what they are here cos I don't wanna spoil anything x3

But yeah, I love everything about it (apart from the quick time stuff x3 but again, that's not a complaint or anything cos it was done brilliantly! That's just me, haha.) It's going straight on my recommendations list <3 Really awesome job to the whole team!! ^-^

(PS. I'll be back to rate when I can! Itch says I'm not allowed to rate this yet until I've rated things from my "ratings queue - to encourage fair distribution of ratings" Which is fair enough!)
