It's cool that you took the "Fastest Spook in the West" theme and came up with something that musically evokes the Western US (at least to me). I really liked the opening! It set a pretty recognizable tone right away -- I was imagining people exploring the weird/spooky/occult happenings in and around the backroads and desert highways way out in ranch country. The guitar and the xylophone had a good feel to them and it was interesting how they "took turns" throughout the piece. I think you made really good use of some classic horror/sci-fi sounds, too, like the Theremin-like instrument and the creepy strings. I think the choir could have been better integrated into the mix, and there were a few places where I felt like the percussion could have used a bit of variation in volume, but overall the different sounds came together quite well. Great work!
I really like this. The strong rhythmic pattern carried the feel of the cattle drive through to the end and gave the piece a lot of movement. The cattle itself, or whatever it was that was swept along in the drive, felt like tormented old spirits flitting here and there, sometimes visible, sometimes stampeding with the herd. I got wisps of old Batman nemeses and Scooby Doo Haunted House Ghosts as they thundered by. The echoey fade at the end perfectly captured the wake.
Good song! I think it sounds like a ride in a bandwagon with creepy cattle!
I think this is a really cool mix of western and horror music! Some things that stick out to me include the ascending chromatic bassline that subverts my expectations as it suddenly jumps up a whole step in the middle. It’s not a strictly chromatic line, but it doesn’t fit into any scale that I’m familiar with. I like the VSTs you chose, especially the voices - you were able to make them sound like the ghost voices from the N64 Mario Kart Haunted Boardwalk level. There were plenty of other spooky moments for sure, some of them sounding unconnected, but I think that works in a spooky Halloween song! I think your use of percussion with fast ride cymbal gives the sense of a fast song which fits the theme of the jam. I like your use of xylophone, but it doesn’t quite feel prominent like the main melody, though the xylophone to bass guitar trade off is a memorable moment. Overall, great job and thank you for sharing!
Great song! Sounds nice on the first listen.
Nice use of instruments, you clearly hear the spookiness in them, mainly in the funny instrument that rises in 0:43 (love it!) and the vocalish sounds. I like the (I-think) dissonance of 0:56 followed by the nice back-and-forth of guitar and xylophone! The song is not overwhelming, but also not underwhelming. And the end-part is a funny end to it ;). Well done!
