I too struggle/thrive with ADHD. I love the idea of the game, and the ideas within. One challenge is that I’m not sure how to approach it as a player that deals with ADHD in real life. “You are an alternate version of yourself. You have ADHD.”
I learned two things about myself reading the rules of the game:
1. The idea of reflecting on what I’ve accomplished in a day is really stressful for me. I feel anxious right now actually. I often feel guilt about the things I hyper-focussed on, and the things I didn’t give enough time and attention.
2. I struggled to read all the rules. I think it’s because there are no graphical elements to help me scan and go straight to the parts that “hook” my brain. This is not a criticism of the game, just an observation from an ADHD brain.
In short, I like that ADHD is being covered, it made me reflect on my own experiences, and as written I think it’s probably more appropriate for neurotypical minds to play in order to increase their understanding.
Yeah, my primary audience for the game has always been those without ADHD to help them understand what it's like. Most of the ADHD effected people that playtested the game had a similar experience, myself included. I found it emotionally draining, but there were some with ADHD that didn't have that reaction. I think it depends on how ADHD presents in the person.
If you have anyone in your life who has difficulty understanding what you go through, pass this along to them. I hope it helps if you do. 🙂
Great idea. As the author himself states, it can also be used for any other kind of disorder, even mild, as anyone can have. And it can be used, as I so much like, to complicate a character’s story and create twists for your too-standard character’s life. Finally, it’s funny to read that Terry Pratcher was influenced by one of the greatest and most influential Spanish philosophers of the early 20th century, José Ortega y Gasset, and his notable sentence: “Yo soy yo y mis circunstancias”, “I am myself and my circumstances”.
You know, I was working on this off and on for months, and I never thought about using it as a way to flesh out a character. I love that idea! I also would love to see people repurpose/remix this idea for other neurodivergencies.
I could see this being a really useful teaching tool. Thanks for creating it!
Thank you!
