Good! Interesting idea with terminal

Host

Not every day that you see a game submitted to the jam with a manual! I really enjoy the care and attention to detail you engaged in by going beyond the tropes of Five Night's At Freddy's and creating a complex management horror game. Whilst designed in the same way, this game is definitely a lot more involved with understanding systems and interfacing with the text input and commands to see results. The design of the environment shows examples of character and humour that add an additional element of worldbuilding to the game - I especially found the trashed manual quite funny. I think for constructive feedback, consider how ramping up the implementation of systems and difficulty could help ease players into comfortably using the game's systems. Some quality of life featuers, including direct text input into the screen rather than a text box and a replay button on failure could help keep the flow of the game going. But all in all this is a great achievement for a jam game and I hope you're able to continue developing these ideas - either as a post-jam version or in future projects!

Thanks for being a part of the Scream TV jam!

Neat game. I like the cmd window is visible. Gave it a five star rating would be great if you did the same :)

This game was neat. Not enough games utilize a cmdline, and I actually like how this one does it, with the cmd window always visible and in a draggable window.

LastMinuteGames kinda covered the point about balance with the turret, and others have mentioned the sorta steep initial learning curve, but after engaging the game a couple of times I found a groove with it. I also like how this game changes the formula on these sorts of games--at least from what I'm familiar with, usually the monsters in the cameras just are directly threatening to you and your actions are about preventing that, but the spider eating the energy from the reactor or the camera aberration messing with the servers, it's stuff that indirectly harms you and kept things fresh.

I don't think the manual was a problem personally, especially when you're totally safe until you enter 'boot' into the computer, I liked the flavor it added.

Sorry you had to stay up until 2 am to submit on time, but I think y'all have made something pretty good. Happy to see what you come up with next. Thanks for your efforts!

It was a little hard to get at first, but the concept of using the terminal to run things is absolutely awesome. I could see this evolved into a full project. Good stufff!

I had a hard time understanding what I was supposed to do, but once I got it it kept me on my toes!

I think that the amount of info on the manual might scare a lot of players away from the experience, my suggestion would be to maybe have a smaller, more concise manual andd maybe add the fun bits as an audio playing before you can get into the meat of things.

The game was super fun! I love the idea of what you're going for, and I can appreciate how much effort it took to get all of this working. Granted, it took me a shaming amount of time to figure out what I actually needed to do to win, but, the game was always keeping me moving and thinking! Really well done!

- Issues -
It would be a lot easier to understand how to win if the manual was easier to read and also wasn't as long as it is. I understand that there is a lot of information you wanted to convey, but most the information wasn't really relevant to the gameplay. (Though I do love having it there, it shows you put thought into the details!)  I think it would be best to find another area to put that information, like a command that allows you to view logged information of the entities instead?

Secondly, the spider was way too easy to ward off. The door took a lot of energy to use, but the turret basically didn't take anything at all. So it made more sense to just let the spider roam free, and just leave the turret on. Either way I would have to keep powering the generator, but with the door never using power, it gave me more time to focus on the other entity.  This basically made it so the spider was never really a threat.

Finally, the sat "setup" command is shown in the "help" command. But I couldn't find a use for "sat setup [x]" anywhere. I probably missed something, but incase it was meant to be important I thought I'd mention it.

- Overall -
Honestly one of my favorite games played this jam so far. It takes inspiration from games such as FNAF and the SCP foundation, but, the added ability to control the facility using console commands is pretty cool! I hope you make this a fully fledged project!

Thanks a lot for the review!

Part of the idea with the manual was that it was very shitty and sloppily put together on purpose, with only a few bits of useful information (that is easier to read) spread throughout. Due to time crunch and most of the work happening near the end, the actual mechanics in the game are Slightly different from how they where in the manual, and also some of the things that where meant to be relevant just simply ended up not getting implemented.

The setup command is actually needed to get the game's ending after completing the calculations, it even directly tells you to run it when completed. So I'm not sure if you misremembered that or if there's some other bug.

The game definitely could've done with a bit more balancing, and maybe at some point i can add more "shifts" to add some extra mechanics, but I'm super proud of what we managed to do in the time we had, especially since this is my first finished game lol.

As for making this a fully fledged project, I'm actually working on a game with a similar premise called BIOS (puzzle horror game with a technology theme) that will partially use the terminal mechanic (alongside a bunch of other stuff, its way bigger in scope), and its actually what we originally made the spider model for! I'll probably start putting the alpha versions of that on itch at some point in development.

You are absolutely correct, I completely forgot that I used the setup command when punching in the coordinates! I'm sorry, I retract what I said lol

In any case, really good work on your game, especially with the given time! I look forward to any future project you put out.

Super cool. Has some serious potential!
