SCREAM JAM 2024 gHost's Choice -
It’s always nice to see old models of gameplay, and this is a simple but well-rounded classic graphical text adventure made in Godot with plenty of mechanics to test out. Players navigate an asylum, fighting and evading monsters to escape its confines. In the tradition of classic adventures, there’s dialogue, locations to explore, puzzles to solve to find the exit, and critically an RNG based combat system based on basic skills and weapons. The well-written prose leaves the atmosphere to the player’s imagination. A great example of game development that can do a lot with a little.
Thank you for submitting Asylum to SCREAM JAM 2024, and congratulations on being selected as one of the ten gHost's Choice entries for the jam!
Wow!!! This is such an incredible honor. Especially considering all the other (far better) fantastic games under consideration. Thank you so much for your kind words!
Nice experience, kept me entertained to get all the endings haha
I really liked the dice roll for combat and the story. Great work!
Thank you!! I'm so glad to hear people were willing to not only play it through but play it multiple times. Really means a lot to hear.
Really like this approach to text-based adventure. The map is super helpful as I usually have no idea where I am in text-only games. The static images are excellent and add to the horror whilst not breaking too much with the text-based context. Nice simple roll-vs-roll combat system too.
Thank you! Haha I spent a good portion of my jam time figuring out the map (and most of the remaining time figuring out how to make the images wobble) so glad you liked it
I enjoyed this one, great work
this was mad interesting dude, great unique style of gameplay!
I really enjoyed the game. The stroy was great, it got me tried again and again wanting to get all the endings. A job well done!
Thank you! I'm so glad to hear that :)
The narrative was the best I've seen so far :) Well done!
That is so kind!! Especially coming from you, who made such a wonderful and professional game (not even in the same league as anything I could make). Thank you!
Thank you very much! I'm a big believer in the idea that you're capable of anything you put your mind to, though :) don't sell yourself short!
Fun to see these old-school types of RPGs around. Took me some time to learn how to equip the items, but otherwise the gameplay was pretty smooth (expect when I tried to click the text faster and accidentally walked to an enemy but that's on me lol). Good stuff, good work.
Ah, thank you! Yeah I'll have to add that to the list of things to fix once voting is over
This was super nostalgic, I love text based adventure games. I am still missing one of the endings, but it's been real fun playing it so I think I'll get back to it to complete it. The dice rolls add a lot to the old school vibe. Yeah, sometimes you lose "unfairly" but that's what saves are for. Real cool game, really enjoyed it.
I'm so glad you liked it!! I was worried it would be too niche to attract any fans. FYI one of the four endings is just dying so make sure to count that if you're hunting for them (I caught a bug after release that I forgot my death count was zero-indexed still so it will say 0 of 4 but its still one of the four).
Oh then I got all four endings! It's niche yeah, but it'll definitely find its public.
I just remembered that I caught a small bug (nothing that impacted the gameplay). When you equip a weapon after you got a couple, the upper screen displays a different one instead of the one that's actually properly equipped. It behaves normally during fights so, as I said, not a big deal.
Enemies' pictures waving was an interesting idea I haven't seen anywhere else.
Haha glad you liked it, I wasted a full day of the 3.5 days I had for the jam learning shaders so I could do that one effect 😅
It wasn't wasted ^)
