If you have implemented the modifier, how have you done so?
Everything has a sfx, and are differentiated by the surface type. Player is breathing, has footsteps, and has multiple death sounds. Also, just listen to them turrets baby, very excessive sfx lol

Any additional information for voters?
This game has inherently bad input mechanics, but your death is rewarded. So that's bad, but good, right?

I should preface my comment by saying I'm usually not a big fan of platformers, probably because I usually suck at them. But I'm especially not a fan of frustrating platformers in jams, so this was already not going to be a game for me.

There's a lot to like, the graphics and audio are nice, and I like the detail of being bale to use your own corpse for a platform to jump on. But I just don't find much joy in repeatedly dying and starting over. The changing controls I think fall under being "so bad its good", but for me the overall loop falls kinda flat.

The game is well put together for an intentionally frustrating game, it's just not for me.

Good work!

Such a good concept!

I really like the idea of you being able to climb on top of your own dead bodies to progress! It's such a creative idea and actually works really well! Luckily  I got very used to the changing controls with the entry Try 2 Die  last year, so it actually came surprisingly natural to me!

I did eventually encounter a soft-lock. I my eyes, there are 2 ways this could be fixed:

  • Turn the dead bodies into one-way platforms. This way the user could still move past them horizontally, which is the main cause of these blockers.
  • Have a way to either shoot/disintegrate or move the bodies

Or some fun other idea!

Otherwise, the game looks really good, and I think the platforming is generally quite nice! I did have an issue with not being able to walk off the moving platforms without jumping, but that's pretty small.

Thanks for taking part in the jam!

Thanks for the feedback! We wanted to move the corpses in some sort of way to prevent massive pile ups, and we wanted the 1 way collision but the way we set up the corpse objects made the direction of that one way collision difficult to figure out since it is based on the current direction of the player. Most times you fall facing right, but if you fell facing left you would fall through the corpse. It could have been done but we tried that 4 hours before submit and didn't want to focus on it lol

Thanks for hosting a fun jam! I plan to be back next time!

I love this game! But please turn these gems(?) into checkpoints. That would also result in less soft locking as the same obsticals atent played that often.

Loved the concept of random input every time the player dies. Excellent Work!

Thanks!

Managed to stack so many corpses that I wasn't able to proceed very far. In general a really cool idea to use previous bodies in future runs. Think I've played a game with similar gimmick for random controls in the previous SBIG jam but it keeps you on your toes and makes a new run fresher.  Art was amazing as well!

Developer

That's unfortunate. The corpses can help or hinder. We would have liked more mechanics that involved moving the bodies, but alas game jam scope caught up to us.

I eventually got softlocked behind a pile of corpses following that mildly precise drop down that chute of spikes. The randomized inputs did feel a bit like contrived artificial difficulty as well.

I can still see some signs of a very good game here, but the softlock just killed the mood.

Our approach of "bad" was that the underlying mechanics were bad lol but with some more effort we would have liked a mechanic for moving bodies. Thanks for the feedback!

The idea of random input every time the player respawn is really cool, but I actually found the way to cheese it.

See, the way you implement random inputs is to randomly assign actions for the first 3 buttons you press after respawn. This not only include arrow keys and the space bar but also the entire keyboard (except for K since it's reserved for kill-bind) (maybe also not the function keys).

This mean that you can actually rig the placement of these action keys to make them more intuitive to use. For example, this is how I like to assign these buttons:

  • Press F
    • If it's jump -> Press S
      • If it's left -> Press D
      • If it's right -> Press A
    • If it's left -> Press H
      • If it's right -> Press space bar
      • If it's jump -> Press G
    • If it's right -> Press S
      • If it's left -> Press space bar
      • If it's jump -> Press D

This way, you'll always have one hand pressing left with the left button, pressing right with the right button and the other hand pressing the jump button.

As for the complaints,

The idea of piling corpses sounded cool at first, until it started clogging up some of the narrow tunnels, making they harder to get past and potentially creating a soft lock.

The turrets also seem kinda too advanced for such a silly game like this. They actually predict the player's movement (and is actually really good at it) and also shoot really fast projectiles. Combined with the 1 HP protagonist and the lack of save points, it really creates a frustrating experience.

you are a genius

Nah i simply have this bad habit of trying to cheese every game i play

I love the idea of changing controls every time you die, but I think it'd be good if game had checkpoints(those pink things dont do anything, maybe this is bug?) Also, I think you should make bg a little bit darker, because now gameplay is blending into background a little bit. Also ground detection don't work sometimes, and you are making small second jump instead of big first jump. But overall it is nice game!

Developer

The pink things are just pickups. You have to collect them all to complete the level. Thanks for the feedback!

Random inputs in every run >O. you're evil! It was a real fun! Thank you.

Submitted

You also have double-jump...

Developer(+1)

Oh no! How long until you found the double jump?

Submitted

Long enough to die few times hahah

Developer(+1)

Is evil enough to be bad? lol Thanks for playing!

It was totally evil enough to be bad! 😈
