I think making the goal so rigid is the biggest flaw.
Also, with just pixels the game doesn't seem to be fun enough, but I do see big potential. I'm gonna add it to my mechanics folder actually.
Like, I enjoy just going through mtg cards online, reading them, and trying to find some good ones.  It'll be cool if instead of trying to find a cool unit I would have the ability to merge some cards, mutate some properties, and make myself some powerful stuff.

The premise of the game is pretty interesting.

Playing with the different organisms and seeing them grow is pretty satisfying.

That said, there is too much randomness and down time for it to really be engaging.

In level 4 I had several organisms with only 1 square left to match the pattern, but the game just never gave it to me. I spent like 10 minutes, duplicating stuff to have a go at getting the pattern, not receiving it, keeping 1 good organism and duplicating it again, rinse and repeat.

Also the mutating function wasn't available to me somehow ?

I know it sounds a bit harsh, but the main gimmick is pretty fun, I just think some mechanics needs to be streamlined for it to be really great.

There is a good foundation in there :)

Thanks for the review, I 100% agree with everything you say. It definitely does need some tweaks to streamline the mechanics. If i go back, ill also have to continue brainstorming on how to decrease randomness without giving full control to the player. I'm thinking even biasing the randomness in favor of the player would probably make a massive difference and decrease frustration. Plus allowing to selecting a tool and click organisms instead of having to drag organisms one by one will speed up the gameplay.

For level 4, the reason mutate is unavailable is because there is only a single color.  I know that it could be clearer. I'll definitely add some tooltips on the modifiers if I go back to it.

The idea for the game seemed nice but the sudden thrust into the mechanics and the unclearness and eyesore of a row of text throws me off. The game’s nice but if you took more time to teach each mechanic and how they work, it would work out for a game such as yours. There’s also the lack of an undo and reset to deter other players away from the game… Nice idea but not nice enough of an execution.

I agree, If i go back i will add tooltips over each tool and also create intro screens to the first few levels to introduce the tools one by one. I chose to leave out the undo button since it would make the game far too easy since you could just keep redoing an operation until you get what you want. Reset button would have been good though.
