Question about rating (number of votes)

Hi all,

Sorry if this has been asked before.

I was wondering how would entries that have a low number of ratings be judged against those entries that have a higher number of ratings?

Example: how would a game that has 10 ratings be judged against a game that has 20 ratings (assuming the voting deadline has passed).

Just to note that I am not talking about whether a game has a rating (4/5 or 2/5 etc), but I'm more curious about the count of ratings (the number of ratings).

Does itch's platform provide a balancing feature or something?

Thanks

Hi sintech, as we understand it, Itch.io automatically adjusts scores by considering the number of ratings in relation to the median number of ratings across all games. This means that a game with only a few ratings won’t automatically rank at the top.

Hi there,

I'm not quite sure if my answer is correct, but i think the judgement will be based on the ratings itselves not the amount of ratings. So i think they will be taking the average rating (total points of ratings divided by amount of ratings) which would work out for games with less ratings as well.

I think this makes much more sense.

Otherwise, I foresee a little unfairness. :)

I see late submissions with higher number of ratings than those that submitted in the deadline.

And though I am glad everyone is getting a chance, it would be nice if everyone voted for each other.

By the way, I loved the artwork for your game, julescatrina :)

Thank you a lot!

Tiny and I had a chat about the löate entries, because int he rules it stated that the deadline was non-negociable. There can always be technical errors but there were so many late entries after 7p.m. and i think it is a little unfair towards those who submitted their games in time.

TBH i do not get Leitner's answer, because most rated is not equal to best rated, in my opinion.

But we'll see this evening

Hi to clarify what I mean and how we understand how itch works: Itch.io’s rating system tries to balanc fairness by using the median number of ratings across the jam to prevent a few highly rated or widely rated games from skewing results. It also applies a Bayesian average, meaning games with very few ratings don’t automatically rank at the top, even if they have perfect scores. Instead, their score is weighted towards the jam’s overall average until they receive enough ratings to stabilize. This ensures rankings reflect both quality and rating volume fairly.

Dankeschön für die Erklarung! :)
