Description
I used FL Studio to make my music. I loosely settled on the idea of the game having a story about a few people from different worlds who wind up having to team up together to... I dunno, solve mysteries and save the world(s) and so forth.
And so, I tried representing that idea by having three different pairs of a "character theme" and a "world theme". Again, I didn't worry about coming up with all the precise details, but the rough concepts for each are:
- A person with magic, from some strange fantasy-ish land that normally stays hidden from the mundane world. [character theme: "a mischievous stranger"; world theme: "a peculiar world"]
- A person from the far future, who traveled back in time to the present day. (Maybe they came intentionally, or maybe it happened through some kind of accident?) [character theme: "visitor from tomorrow"; world theme: "the world yet to come"]
- A mysterious person with a mysterious past, from some mysterious place shrouded in mystery. (Not that they're deliberatively being secretive; they're also trying to solve the mystery of themselves. Perhaps they lost their memories; perhaps they learned there was some dark secret in their past; perhaps the world they knew had vanished without a trace...) [character theme: "exile from nowhere"; world theme: "a forgotten world"]
Each character also shares a leitmotif with their world (or at least, that's what I aimed for, in any case), as well as some shared instrumentation and such. I also tried to make the different worlds/characters have themes in very different styles, both to connect the characters with their own worlds and to emphasize how different their respective worlds are from each other.
I also made a few additional tracks, because I really am not great at managing my time. (Yeah, sure, I could probably make two more tracks AND also handle all of the exporting/uploading/submitting/etc. all on the last day, that's totally a reasonable workload to give myself. Incidentally, it is 30 minutes before the deadline as I write this, and I did not sleep last night.)
Those other tracks are:
- "of other worlds": Probably a title screen or menu theme? (or a theme for an early location in the game?) Regardless, this track would have to be the "main theme" more than any of the others. The track starts with a short melodic phrase that I consider the "main motif" of the game, and which I tried to include in some form in every track.
- "the space between worlds": Theme for a hub world/world map/etc. Goes along with the previous theme, as sort of a pair of their own, with this one giving a different atmosphere to some of the same melodic ideas.
- "the fate of all worlds": A final boss theme, or a theme for some similarly climactic moment. Also known as "I just bought this choir plugin and I'm damn well gonna take this opportunity to use it"
Theme
How does it fit the theme?
As I mentioned in my description above, the characters are all from their own different worlds (which they'll all presumably have to discover/explore/save/etc. together at some point)
