Description
Genre:
Smokey Slots genre inspiration is drawn from lounge style jazz as well as deriving a sound from retro games.
Whats the game?:
While coming up with ideas I had settled on this: What if there was a beat-em-up style game modeled after space opera anime like Cowboy Bebop? So I got to work.
Representation:
I wanted to create an atmospheric track that made you feel like you were fighting goons and henchmen through a casino while the in house band plays. I went with lounge style jazz to show that perhaps this song is supposed to play at later stages, that maybe you're intruding into enemy territory. You're on their turf and they're the ones who are relaxed, because you went into the den of Vipers.
Composition and DAW: While composing this track in FL Studio 21 I drew upon my normal artistic process. Worked with drums to get a nice swinging groove and a bass line that went along with it. Trial and error took a huge role in the creation of the guitar/organ hits. Once I had these building blocks set I was able to create a baseline for how long each chunk would take. Once that was done I brought on my MIDI controller to come up with a melody that the sax and trumpet would carry and did some improvisational recording for each part and then cleaned up after.
Message from the artist
Hello! My name is Morrigan, but everyone calls me Morri. I've been actively making music for over a decade and I've always wanted to compose music for games. I believe music is just as important to the experience of gaming and can tell its own story to those who are willing to listen closely.
Please enjoy with a cup of tea or coffee :)
Theme
How does it fit the theme?
Smokey Slots is a small window to a world made up within just moments before this jam even started. A small window into my world and a glimpse into my mind.

for some reason i feel like this could be a theme for a donkey kong casino lol
I was impressed by the very different tempo, it seems quite unique to me. I see this as a dystopian world full of unusual casinos, what a great job!
IS THIS LAS VEGAS?!
Definitely one of the most unusual soundtracks of this jam) I felt a groovy jazz band that always plays music, despite all the bacchanalia that can happen around (Respect+)
P.S. I drank a cup of coffee to your soundtrack. Heh)
Great fun - it's a casino level in a Sega Genesis game for sure! Nice one!
Nice rythm, very different. Mix is pretty good. But I feel its missing some movement and motion in the piece, other than that well done !
very diverse! "you like JaZz?!!🦕
beating up those henchmen cuz they know full well they just dont want me to hit that jackpot. its only a matter of time. I'll sell my right liver and come back cuz when this song starts kicking, you'll know i aint playing.
dude, yes ヽ( ̄ω ̄( ̄ω ̄〃)ゝ
Capturin' that nite life. I was partial to this as I tend to inject jazz into most of my own creations. Super good work.
Thank you for listening! Glad you liked it ^^
Lets Go Gambling!
aww dangit :<
Really interesting one! Very different flavour. Really cool rithm puzzle that keeps you into the track.
Glad you enjoyed! Thanks for listening :)
Almost a minute in, and I still can't tell the meter of this piece! Mixed meter works to keep the listener completely compelled, as it doesn't let them get comfortable with a beat. The otherwise straightforward harmony and unchanging accompaniment results in something rather trance-like, which works well for the context of a casino. I wonder what you could have come up with creatively to tie it more into the theme-- yes, most pieces are a glimpse into the composer's personal world. But how could you have tied it together and made a story about 'entering into someone's world' in a unique, personal way? Regardless, nice work, and keep writing!
Thank you for your critique! Would you believe it's written in 4/4? I'll certainly keep your words in mind for my future endeavors and be a little more prepared for future jams!
