Love it! You've captured the feeling of those old Dragon Quest games that I enjoy so much. Well done.

Some errors(?) to report:

  1. Like with the love studios, I was not able to complete the Silver Root quest because the doorway opens the pathway to walk around on the treetops. Nothing could be found.
  2. After Tex joined the party, I collected the bombs and other equipment from the treetop hideout, then rested and saved at the campfire at the base of the hideout. After that, attempting to leave the area did not leave the screen, it just made the characters invisible. After stumbling around blind (invisible) I eventually found my way out of the forest but still did not re-appear until I stumbled into the mountain pass area and triggered another cutscene.
  3. After defeating the Stone Golem at the end of the mountain pass, I realized I missed the treasure hinted at in the dead man's note, so I immediately re-entered the mountain pass area and was promptly attacked by the Golem again.

Still playing. Looking forward to discovering more. I keep dying in the dream-of-lies inside the temple. Being perpetually muted makes the battles abruptly impossible. Difficulty went from 7 to 299 real fast. Should I be grinding for levels a lot more before getting to that point?

Thanks for the bug report. I was planning on making an after jam version anyways, so these bugs will be tackled then. And yes, the devourer is a bit strong, maybe I'll have to balance that out a bit. Or maybe more equipment with status protection.

Amazing!

Was loving every minute of it, but unfortunately, I got stuck!

After rescuing the old man, he told me to go look for a secret path.  I did, but the path just let me run around the tree tops.   I have a feeling it was supposed to be a doorway to another area but it didn't trigger for me for some reason.

Here's a screen shot so you can see:

Others have made it further, so I know there must be more, so I'm still giving high scores across the board for this one.  It's awesome!  Great work!  I only wish I could give it extra bonus points for finally letting me slay Cunning Broccoli with abandon, just as like I've always dreamed of doing!  :)

Congratulations on first place in the jam :)

Fantastic game! This must have taken a lot of work. Great story and tons of details. The world reminded me of Hyrule from the Zelda games.

Very impressive game! I like the rich story and the fighting mechanics.

Hi.  Big fan of storyrich turn based RPGs and excited to see one in the submissions. I am playing the original game first since we have the play both before rating and am wondering when each game "ends." Should I keep trying to get through the mountain mine or start the updated game?

Developer (1 edit)

Both games have an end, the first games end can just be reached a bit earlier. I know the jam rules, but I don't recommend playing both versions, since they aren't that different for the most part. The updated version "just" has the missing stuff in the end game, two more dungeons and a side quest at the beginning. More stuff was planned, but at some point I had to decide how much more time I was willing to put into something that was just supposed to be a short jam game.

Sorry. I guess I did not understand the rules for updated games. Anyway, here are my thoughts on both games.

I really liked the graphics, music and unique enemies.  Story and puzzles were well done and the enemies were reasonably challenging. I appreciated the textbox color being changed from blue to black since it made Alice's blue text more visible. Exploring the convoluted dream world and finding memories was fun, though the shopkeeper never let me use them even when I had five.  Something that stood out in the updated game was that Wendy (accidently?) started at level 1 instead of 5 or 6 like she had been in the original game, so I had to run around leveling her up before I could proceed. This did level up Tex and Alice too, which was good since when I played the original game, I went straight to the temple and was not strong enough to get past Tex finding Wendy, so it did have some benefit.

My one major issue is in both games after the battle with the Great Devourer,  the game froze as soon as the hooded person said thank you for defeating the demon.  I am pretty sure that was not where the game ends?

Other than that, this is definitely my favorite game in the jam :)

No, that was definitely not the supposed end. I couldn't play test the whole game, just parts of it. Gonna have a look into that. Maybe, if I can find all the bugs, I'm gonna post a final version or something.

Sounds good. I look forward to playing it :)
