You "packed up" one of the most original concepts for this jam :) I loved the idea of mixing the theme with packing your stuff to go to school and the inner thoughts.

The art looks really good, way beyond a 48h game's standard. Made me feel like I was playing an Earthbound game. The music's also good and the controls respond perfectly.

My only complaints are that for a bullet hell, the enemies could have better "attack patterns". The boys always shoot straight at you, while the books spread in a way that makes it really hard to predict... I ended up playing it as a cover and shoot game, hiding in the corners and by the door.

Also, the tutorial is really, really slow. Giving such a long text-based tutorial for players is basically asking them to ignore it. If you update it later, keep it simple and use something else other than text, it'll be way more enjoyable.

So far this is my highest-rated game in this Jam. Way to go!

"So far this is my highest-rated game in this Jam. Way to go!"

Wow really wasn't expecting that! Honestly thank you so much for such great feedback

I definitely agree with you on the tutorial massively because even i got bored of going through it and i was the one who made it in such a rush and i have now learnt that that way of making a tutorial is the worst way to tell the player how to play the game.
And yes about the enemy attack patterns, i really did want to implement them better because it seemed slightly unfair at certain points and almost luck of the draw if you dodge them. Originally the ranged bully was meant to be melee but due to time constraints we didn't quite get that far so next jam i will definitely try to focus more on making the combat a bit more predictable and therefore allowing the player to purposefully and skilfully take down enemies

Thanks for the review :D

Nice bullet hell.  The stairs were really hard to find.

Developer

Thank you and also yes i can see what you mean as they don't really look like stairs all too much

That was nice. I like the overall concept, and the controls were pretty smooth. The game feels very fast paced and frantic, and I think that feeling fits perfectly with the game's theme. My only real gripe would be 1. The tutorial is really slow, and yet is required to know how to play the game (here's an idea, maybe place an image showing the controls as part of the game environment, like, have some writing on the wall which shows how to shoot.) and 2. I couldn't tell which walls I could walk through. Maybe just make tiles that are mean't to be passageways be transparent. Otherwise, really fun game. good job!

Thanks for the great feedback, and yes i agree with you unfortunately the tutorial was very boring and we shouldn't have done it that way even in such a small time frame. And yes also there are a few other comments about doors being hard to find which we have definitely realised :D.

Very frantic experience, this. I will give you my detailed feedback below, and hope that you take it to heart but not personal or attacking. This is just my point of view and I'm in no means the be all, end all of game design, bear that in mind! If the game was bad I wouldn't go through the trouble of writing this! :)

Summary:

Adherence To Theme
  • Fits the Theme extremely well, I like the unique Idea.
Game Design
  • You know yourself that you could've made holes in the wall to indicate I can travel through them. I don't need to tell you that.
  • Overall I like the game Loop, it felt like a Bullet Hell Shooter at some point though, because of that, the barrier to completion is quite high, I feel like. It took me 17 tries to finish and I'd say I'm not the worst player, some people won't finish the play-through for a Jam this hard, I learned that the hard way.
  • There could've been a Cross hair on your Mouse Cursor. (It was ok without but it would add a lot.)
  • There could've been Enemy Health Bars, since they tanked so much damage and spammed attack so hard, at least knowing when they will vanish will help me reduce MY anxiety level. :D
  • Some Items that had to be picked up where kinda hard to make out. Including an Outline or vary them more would make more sense. Why would I pick up a hard wired phone for school but not a Flat screen TV? I don't know because the game only told me that there was something to look for when there where Enemies nearby.
  • I think you over complicated your game in the tutorial section. It was quite the wall of text and could really be simplified to one piece of text, however it's a game jam and it's addition is always welcome! Plus I liked that you have a concise and working Menu System in place!
Originality
  • Very original Idea, shooting Pencils against your bad thoughts and reducing anxiety. Well played on the theme as well.
  • The Gameplay is kind of refreshing in and on itself. I would've stopped playing but wanted to finish it because it was something different.
Style
  • The Pokémon-esque design was very clean and well done!
  • As I mentioned in Gameplay the collectibles could've been a bit clearer but looked very nice.
  • The Animations where pretty stellar, especially the book. I could clearly use a page of that!
  • The music got a bit annoying on my 17th run, it is pretty simple but fits the graphics and Gameplay well. I liked that there was a different theme for the menu, that had the same style but slower.
  • The SFX where reasonable and fit very well.

Overall

Very Solid Game Entry. I think a lot can be done with this in the future and I hope to see more!

Thanks for so much feedback, wow was not expecting that! I really agree with you on several points such as making enemy health bars, making doors easy to see and reducing the overall difficulty slightly. However i didn't think of putting an outline around the collectables which would have been a great idea and also a custom cursor/ cross hair would be a great addition too so especially thank you for those 2 points as we did not think of those. Overall thanks so much for such amazing feedback :D

Glad you took it not as harsh as it sounded. We are here to grow and you got an amazing entry point right there with your game! :)

Some really cool art and a neat idea. It was quite difficult I found, maybe reducing enemy's health would be a good idea so they don't take so long to kill. Overall a very good game for the jam :)

Developer

Thanks a lot and yeah we realised after release that the game was slightly too hard so sorry about that xD

it moves well, and it's quite beautifull!

I had a hard time finding doors, and understanding what objects i could pick up. Maybe some FX could help them stand out!

Cool entry though!

Developer

Okay nice thanks for the constructive feedback
