Birds of Othala is such a lovely entry ♡

The idea of a point and click in a small colorful village to explore with many little details to observe is really something that I found relaxing, especially coupled with the background music

I can definitely see a longer version of it in a full game that many people would enjoy ! Congratulations on your first game-jam !

Feedback in the style of some other jams:

Graphics: This is delightful. The pastel colors remind me a lot of Pendleton Ward's "The Midnight Gospel". You made a very cute village filled to the brim with details!

Audio: The music absolutely fits the environment. Perhaps the loop is a bit short, but the game is short enough that the music doesn't get stale.

Innovation: It's like a digital "Where's Waldo" or "I Spy" book. Though the idea of searching for something and clicking on it has been done before, I like the storytelling, as we are a wanderer passing through a town.

Mood: There's a lot of joyful emotions I feel when playing this. The art is doing a lot of heavy lifting there, but I like how our mysterious character is friendly. The world you created seems like a very nice place to be.

Fun: I wish there was more! I really did enjoy finding the two birds, but I was shocked to see the game ended right there!

Theme/Limitation: I think the limitation here is working against the best interest of the game. If there was more than 2 birds, the player's experience would be better. Perhaps if the character has two items, like a magnifying glass for searching and some second item for delivering found items to a person in need? It would allow for the game to have more characters to help out!

Overall: It's short and sweet! Perhaps too short. I was able to crash the game by replaying after succeeding (it takes you back to the title screen after succeeding, so you can press play again), and clicking on one of the birds. In a "second play through" some other minor issues occurred, such as the person missing their birds not prompting you, and talking to Mayor Letty a second time shows an empty text box that never goes away. Even still, it's a minor issue since I already was able to beat the game before the issues occurred. I love the world you created! Great work!

Oh boy, this game makes me excited. Your art style is so appealing. I could stare at this little village and find birds for hours. The concept is amazing. I would love to get explore and talk to an entire city of people drawn in this style. Its so cozy. Please continue to make games!

My only criticism is that I think that the limitation makes the game worse. There being only two birds to find feels so anticlimatic. Maybe its greedy of me, but I wanted more game to play.

Awesome work, definitely keep making games. I enjoy your style so much.

This is really excellent! The art is so charming and cozy - you mentioned D&D in the description and I can really imagine wanting to explore and talk to all of these people in a game! And I always love when games allow devs to bring their existing impressive skills (in this case in illustration) to the table, even when they’re new to the coding side of things!

Bugs-wise, the restart process didn’t really work? I ended up in a strange halfway state with 1 bird already collected and an inescapable text box from the mayor, and collecting the bird again threw an error.

Like everyone else in the comments section, I really hope you go further with this! The idea of getting to know the town better over the course of a longer game, so it feels more like a home, is really compelling. Nice job!

I absolutely love your art!! The game feels really smooth and it was fun to see all the little details, a really fun bite sized treat and I would love to see what you make in the future!

Feels incredibly polished for your first ever game! Like everyone else I love the art style - but I think you did especially well with the main thumbnail. It immediately jumped out to me in the list of submissions as something I wanted to find out more about.

The village was fun to explore and I can't wait for a larger version of Othala. You've got a great base to iterate off of. However, my feedback is that I felt a bit overwhelmed at the start of the game not being able to know how big Othala actually was. Once I hit the edge of the village and had a sense of scale then I was able to go back and explore the details more relaxed. The ability to zoom out to a bird's-eye view or a simplified minimap could go a long way in the future.

Great job!

Love the art style! It's cute and colorful. I would definitely play a full game with it.

I love this! I'm glad you're planning to expand on this because I would be so happy to play a bigger version. The art and animation are delightful!

What about him? He is also a bird :).
Jokes aside, amazing art style and very sweet idea, a shame it's so short! Amazing job for your first game jam!

This is INCREDIBLE! The art and music are amazing and the bird animations had us genuinely shoked by their beauty and fluidity: it really shows you’re both extremely skilled artists with so much talent.

The game itself is a really nice experience too. Albeit short, taking the time to explore this beautiful painting and admire the stunning visuals and animations is really fun and pleasurable, would love to see an expanded version with more quests and art. Heck, I would actually buy it!

If this is a proof of concept of a bigger project as you mentioned in the game’s description, you’re really headed for greatness!

The art is just suberb!

A very charming micro-game. Very cosy.

As for the game jam submission- the shortness and the simplicity work against the game here. Would love if there were more people to help, and more "pairs of things" to find to justify the limitation.

thank you!!!! and thanks for the feedback, that was my goal I just wasn't able to get it done in time! planning to keep working on it and add lots more interactable objects/characters, and more challenges with pairs of objects to find

Wow, your game is just stunning! Amazing job on the art and music. It was short and sweet but the gorgeous art makes me want to keep replaying it so I can keep looking at your drawing. The animations of the birds flying were also so pretty!! I love how you used the limitation of "only 2" and still did not skimp out on the artwork, it would have been a shame to not see more of your beautiful drawings :) Great intro to the game of meeting a few characters then proceeding with the i-spy style game. Nice job!!

thank you so much, that means the world!!! in my mind there was going to be lots of quests with seeking 2 objects around town.... and I was going to animate way more elements for fun!!! but I'm hoping to keep working on it :)
