Themes
We decided to go for the "They are 4096" theme, interpreting it as there just being countless enemies or "horde"s attacking the player. It helped us come up with the idea for an arcade style game

Tools
We used Godot for development for the game, Photoshop for art and Audacity for the sounds. Though Godot has had a very rapid development in community and development as of late, it still comes with its own challenges, some of them because their widespread use is still a relatively newfound thing. That being said developing in Godot is a blast, despite not being as well documented or developed as say Unity or Unreal Engine, it is quickly building up to become a great piece of software, and not before long it could really solidify itself as "one of the big three" in the game engine market

Lessons
I developed faster problem solving and my GDScript has improved after this jam, though for this gamejam I didn't have much focus on commenting too much on my code, and I decided to comment on things a very late night as kind of an afterthought. The artist, Kodaiko or just "Koda", helped a lot this jam, coming up with ideas, sketching concepts for how the game will look and work, art for the game and made working within our 64x64 limitation as easy as possible, I had a great time working with him!

very fun game, i wish i was able to know how much i've spun though like a compass type thing, but other than that, it was amazing!

Developer

That would be a very fun feature 😂 Thank you for your feedback!

Fantastic artwork. You've done a really good job working within the limitations and still making the game look great. The zombie designs are full of character and the use of colour in the game sells the dark, dreadful atmosphere you were going for.

I'm glad you included directional audio as its definitely a must for a game like this. I think the audio was lacking a little in other departments though. The lack of ambient audio makes the game less spooky, and the gunshot sound is a little too flat and reverby to be satisfying.

The gameplay itself is fine - just rotate and shoot. It can become fun to manage all of the zombies appearing and can quickly become hectic (in a good way). It would've been cool to see some events that could randomly happen or something to keep the gameplay more engaging.

Anyway, cool game and good work :)

Thank you for your feedback!
I agree the artist did a great job for the game, both what you see in the game itself and visualizing concepts and ideas for implementation
I'll see about adding more sound effects and ambience soon, I would also want to change the shooting sound to something more snappy and satisfying, right now it's just a heavily edited "P" that I recorded
I'm really glad you found the game fun to play! And I love the idea about events occasionally happening to spice up the gameplay, I might explore the idea in my spare time at some point. Though right now we don't have any plans to develop any big updates for the project, we'll see what the future holds!

Hey this was great, though I found my tactic was just holding one direction and "spinning" while popping off shots - since I had no way of knowing where zombies were. That made it feel tense and a little claustrophobic which really went in the games favour. The sound effects made my partner look over with some concern on her face, again this is a positive lol. Well done.

There is definitely a "tank rush" strategy with holding a directional key and shoot the zombies as they go by, though I did not know how to solve that issue without overcomplicating the game. Perhaps implementing point-and-click shooting rather than a line-up and fire type gameplay could be a relatively simple solution to solve this to some extent? Thank you for your feedback!
