Description
Like on the previous jam, I kept a sort of devlog/journal thing: https://eetusuikkanen.wordpress.com/2024/09/22/impressions-composing-jam-ambience-1/
I wrote in more detail on my devlog page, so I'll write a more shorter one here:
I originally was going to use both themes, for a sort of ambientish chill track with some folky woodwind stuff, synth drones/pads, bells and some singing with lyrics from a poem taken from the Finnish novel "Seitsemän Veljestä" by Aleksis Kivi (nicked the idea from KaleOverlord in the jam discord😉).
I got pretty far on the track during the first 2-3 days or so of the jam, but then I kinda lost all motivation for working on that track and didn't pretty much do any work on it at all for the next 5 days or so.
On Day 7 I realized there was only 3 days left in the jam for me, so I made the decision to just start fresh and make a new track (wish I'd done that sooner...).
Wanted to make sure I wouldn't tread the same path on this one, I decided to go for a more synth heavy instrumentation on whatever i came up with this time.
I first sketched out some chord progressions with a synth pad sound (that I fixed the voice leading on later down the line, thanks to some tips from FoxHyode), put down a basic beat with some Linndrum sounds, added a synth bass that followed the root notes in a sort of disco octave style, some backround elements with an arpy bell and finally came up with a lead melody.
Initially I wanted to try doing some singing as the lead in this for practice, but really couldn't get any lyric ideas, so I just fixed up some synth leads and other parts during the final day.
Mixing was pretty minimal on this, mostly using EQ on the different tracks , cutting frequencies that felt muddy/unneeded, some sidechain compression on the pad and bass so the kick punches through + I added some tape saturation on the sampled strings and the master channel, since I wanted this to have the feel of a track from an old 80's adventure movie.
For the mastering part I used a plugin called bx_masterdesk by brainworx that I had snagged for free some time ago but never actually used it. I’m not a production pro but the plugin felt like some sort of a combination of a compressor, eq and other stuff, presented with controls named using basic terms so even an idiot like me can use it without reading a manual 😉.
Description of Setup (Optional)
Cubase stock plugins for mixing and effects
Valhalla Vintage Verb for Reverb
UAD Verve Analog Machines Essentials for Tape saturation on the Master Channel
UAD Polymax for all the synth sounds
Addictive Drums for the Linndrum Drum samples
8Dio Anthology strings (Chamber preset) for the backing violin parts
8Dio Liberis for the childrens choir
Kontakt Factory Library for the Orchestral Chimes
I added a screen shot of the mixer view of the project where you can see the plugins and EQ curves used on the top parts of the mixer.

This was really interesting, as has been said it wasn't the way i expected this theme to be interpreted but still a welcome listen nonetheless, i liked your ideas and it was quite enjoyable, i think you really captured those synthwave vibes here
I listened to your stuff in the devlog. I love how 80s it sounds. It definitely is a very unique take and vibe I wouldn't have expected.
Very fun stuff.
Oh and the meow synths. Man, this is some wild stuff. It's really well done too. Totally wild.
Great work.
Don't know how I never realised what that synth lead actually sounds like 😂.
Glad you liked it!
A very original idea for this jam! Even so, I believe you managed to convey the northern climate very well.
Hey! I did a review of your entry via video. I posted it on the Jam discord but appreciate everyone might not be on there. Here's the video timestamp for your entry: https://youtu.be/1-aLhBdNCKE?t=10526
🙏Thanks for the kind words!
I would have never thought to take this painting in this direction, but I absolutely love it. If it weren't for the choir, I would have thought it was straight out of a retro adventure game. And yet, it still totally fits the theme perfectly somehow, and I don't know how you did that. Easily one of my favorites of this whole jam.
Kinda had an old 80's adventure movie soundtrack style in mind with this, like Klaus Doldinger/Giorgio Moroders music for The Neverending Story.
Glad you liked it!
What makes this really cool to me is that you managed to create something very unique that I found still fit the theme. The mixing is strong, and the composition stays interesting the entire piece. There are some really cool chord changes. I caught myself tapping my foot and nodding my head to this! I do think some of the attacks on some synths can feel jarring at times and maybe a little too dry to my taste for this genre. But honestly, I think this is a standout track for this jam. Great job!
Glad you liked it!
Making things more wet wouldn't have been a bad idea! The synths probably feel harsh exactly because they are too dry, making them a bit too in your face.
Hey cool stuff, mix is really great. So you did went with the chord voicing I proposed XD. Super unique stuff, nobody went for a disco/dance track. I like that there is lots of stuff going on but not too repetitive. its a bold choice to go from Am to Bm in a progression but I got used to it the more I listen to.
Originally I was making a more ambient/folkey track that I lost the motivation to continue working on, so I intentionally went in the polar opposite style wise for this second one 😄.
BIg thanks for the voicing mentions, since I seemed to have paid 0 attention to the voice leading while inputting the chords😂, which probably comes from the fact that I usually start my tracks from piano improv recordings, so the voice leading comes pretty intuitively while playing, instead of using the mouse to input😅.
It has a nice kitchen for a dance track, but I got lost in the melodic parts sometimes :(
