This game was cute man. At first I was a little miffed by the back and forth stuff, but I figured out why and it redeemed itself. Enemies did come off as bullet spongey at first, but I figured out the strategies intended. All in all, nice. Also I love the spritework

Thank you so much for the kind words, Mascot! Personally, I am not a big fan of backtracking but I think the maps in the game are small enough for it to be endurable :) Glad you liked my sprite work since I can still be somewhat insecure about the quality of my pixel art :)

Bro, pixel artist to pixel artist, your shit is awesome.

Thank you! This means so much especially coming from a fellow pixel artist :)

Keep it up man ^^

Right from the start -- thank you for lowering the volume to not blow our ears out! It is such a small detail, but it matters!!

I love the victory tune! You might want to include some sort of indicator of where the "safe room" is with a different style / color of door -- like Metroid does with colors to show which bombs you need to use to get inside. I was getting frustrated with the lack of healing opportunities because I started exploration from the bottom and made my way up systematically, so it was one of the last rooms I found. I just don't want people to quit your game prematurely because it deserves to be played through to the end.

I like that puzzles [like the box pushing] stay solved, even if you leave the area and [most of] the enemies stay dead [randomly, the mushroom in the room with the long table on the left side of the map and the bat in the wine cellar looking room both came back, but none of the others?].

I think the credit roll being silent is very fitting for that ending. And the post credits scene was cute.  Overall a really fun 30ish minute adventure!

Thank you so much for your feedback, erin! I genuinely thought the save room was obvious enough since the save point is right next to it. But I do understand that not entering it first can become frustrating really quick. I hope level designs of my future games will be much clearer in their intentions :) Some enemies respawn after resting in the beds because I wanted to give players an opportunity to grind if they struggled with the tougher encounters. So glad you think the game deserves to be played through to the end. That is such high praise. Thank you so much! :)

Nice use of metroidvania-esque items to progress the game. Battles I found challenging at first, but easily managed once I forked out my gold to get the right accessories.

Cool short game!

Thank you, Nowis :) Really glad you liked it :)

This is really neat. I love the little animations such as when a door is locked, if I can't interact with something or his face turning red when pushing a crate - excellent. The atmosphere is great - lovely tiles and the music fits perfectly. Good battle and victory themes... Really like the battle system in general - it's not complicated and is visually clear (thank you, just a personal pref).

Yeah, this was decent. I'm going to keep playing. My only recommendation that comes to mind is pixel facesets to match the rest of the pixel aesthetic. Nice work!

Thank you for all the kind words, codapill :) So glad you appreciated the visual clarity of the battle system since this is always a goal of mine! Thankfully it can be achieved rather easily with the RPG Maker MZ and the help of certain plugins. The music is by Bert Cole whose work I absolutely adore! Should I ever manage to become a more skilled and time efficient pixel artist custom face graphics will become a top priority :)

This was a really surprise! I find the balance almost perfect (items are necessary), a really good level design and the animations are well done! To make the game more appealing graphic-wise, I suggest using a more aesthetically attractive title and to using pixel art faces (if you can).

The end makes me think of a sequel, I'm curious! Good work!

Developer

Thank you so much for the kind words, Thund :) Technically I am capable of creating pixel art faces and maybe even a more appealing title graphic. But it would have taken me a very long amount of time that I rather spent creating the game itself :) The ending was meant to represent another kind of second chance at life rather than alluding to a sequel :)

Really enjoyed this game! Strangely I found the map design really impressive and well laid out.

Great characters and could see this being expanded on!
