Newbie Help Thread Sticky

So, I was going to make a cool 'getting started' video intended to help guide people through getting started making their own TTRPG, and showing how it's actually quite easy... But I'm very tired and won't be able to get it out in time for the start of the month.

Instead, I'mstarting a thread for people to ask 'newbie questions', and otherwise help people get started or work through road blocks.

I'm a seasoned Tabletop RPG author... Who hasn't actually finished a game yet, so any of my advice should be taken with a chunk of rock salt, but I'll do my best!

I'm probably not going to make a video, but I think I will try to write a brief article with the basics. I work best when I'm given a prompt, so if anyone has any questions about the process, PLEASE ask them in this thread.

Someone else asked on Discord, which I will also ask since I also have the same questions: "Do we need to provide proof that the game is new and got started within the time period? Also do we need to submit in pdf format?"

I never did a GameJam proper and making tips on a PDF would also help. (Technically I did mess with making PDFs before, but still tips help).

Nah, it's not that serious, and you don't need to submit in PDF format.

One of the things that I was going to include in my 'getting started' guide is that Google Drive is a wonderful way to make a tabletop RPG that's very sharable. You can actually export a Google Doc straight to a PDF.

Also if you're willing to do a little learning, the software suite that I'm using for my professionally made game just went COMPLETELY FREE, and it's very powerful.

Sorry, I just ate a bowl of spicy ramen and my brain isn't working. Here's a link to the software, it's called Affinity https://www.affinity.studio/

Hey it's Sins and Virtues here, from a Discord server we're both in! Anywho, I was thinking of doing a 1-page NSFW parody RPG and am wanting some advice on how to make the most out of a 1-page RPG. Preferably in an elaborate and detailed list, but not necessary.

Edit: To clarify, I more so mean in terms of general RPG structure.

Alas, I have very little experience with 1 page RPGs.

I’d recommend finding a bunch and looking at them to see what you can learn. From what I HAVE read, they tend to be very focused on one particular thing.

Crash Pandas is focused specifically around playing as a gang of raccoons driving cars

Lasers and Feelings is specifically trying to emulate classic star trek.

The mechanics need to be ultra simple, ultra focused, and very cleanly conveyed so they fit neatly onto one page.

I see, I see. I'll keep that in mind then. Thanks for the help!

Here's a good guide on them that I know of! https://litzabronwyn.itch.io/you-have-two-stats
