After reading the previous comment I love to see you guys passion for the game itself. Great job team keep killing it!

Developer

;_; that is so nice!! Thank you!!!

Hey, just a heads up, it's pretty sad that the windows version doesn't run, but the rules mention that putting an external link may disqualify you. I hope that does not end up being the case for you, but just wanted to let you know.

Also, as with others, I couldn't quite wrap my head around why I can't build anything, so unfortunately I don't have much of a feedback to give. Still, best of luck and hope you can update this post-jam to fully realize your idea.

Developer(+1)

Hello! Thank you very much for the kind heads-up! Yeah, we're aware of this, but we decided to accept the risk and leave the link; we don't mind being disqualified from the voting and have no ambition of being in the selection, but we wanted people to at least be able to see the game we worked so hard on, as a last-minute submit sadly broke our Windows build ;_; We made sure that the web build is identical to what we had at the deadline, with no further improvements. Once voting concludes, we'll update this page with a working Windows build. Thank you very much for the concern, it's really appreciated <3

Haha that's fair. Also totally forgot to mention in the original comment (I suppose speeding through submissions last day can be tiresome) but the idea is actually really cool! Like you literally "build" to "scales". The art was pretty nice as well. Again, would like to see this fully realized. Good luckkk!

This is a really cool idea and the visuals are great.  I can't figure out what is going on.  It seems like I don't have enough science to build anything anywhere (despite iridescent scales supposedly being free).  A lot more feedback to the player would help a ton.  I would love to see this idea fleshed out more.

Developer

Thank you so much for the kind words! Completely agree on all counts - as is often the case in gamejams, tutorialization got the short end of the stick and as a result the game isn't super understandable to a newcomer. We hope to polish and improve it further post-jam!

As for the building, at the beginning of the game you only have enough Science to build really close to the maw of the snake; subsequently, building Labs (the towers with the light at the top) gets you more Science while they're standing and let you build further away. But we completely agree that this is currently not well communicated.

I has to start the game twice, read the tutorial twice, read the comments, and click everyhere, to finally build something. I understood that I should build a settlement and a mine, but it's still unclear why i could build at some points and why not at others, and how to move around. Sometimes the UI was red to select a place, but i was able to build, and sometimes the UI was green or blue and I wasn't able to build. The criteria which decide if i have enough SCIENCE or not are still very unclear.
It's a bummer because the game has such a unique concept and drips with style. I wish I understood how it works, and  I'd really like to play the updated version.

Thank you very much for the kind words and in-depth comments! Indeed, because of lack of time the balancing & tutorialization of the game took a hit; we hope to polish both post-jam, as well as improve the feedbacks.
Regarding the Science, at the beginning of the game you can only build very close to the snake's maw; once you've gotten keratin by building a mine and supplying it with workers from a nearby dwelling, you can construct a lab (the tower with a light on top), which gives you 1 point of Science while it's standing. For each point of Science, you can build further down the snake :) But we agree this is the hardest point to currently understand. Thank you very much for playing!

The game won't load for me, which is a shame because the artwork looks beautiful!

Developer

Thank you very much! Indeed, we had a last-minute issue with the Windows build that locked in for submission ;_; but you can find a working web build of the game here:  https://julienbarbe.com/Projets/Jeux/Ouropolis/Ouropolis.html

Interesting concept, the game is a bit hard to understand but i'm curious to see a post jam vesion.

Developer

Thank you very much! Indeed, we didn't have enough time to implement proper tutorialization; we do hope to improve both the game and the tutorial post-jam!

Awesome job ! Art style is beautiful (both graphic and music) and with wonderful personality, the theme fitting is really clever. Would definitely play a post-jam version :)

Developer

Thank you so much for your kind words!! We're hoping to improve the game post-jam and tutorialize it better. Very happy to read that you already enjoyed this version <3

Submitted(+2)

Quite difficult to understand, but I love the concept and the art !

Developer

Thank you so much! Indeed, as often in a gamejam, tutorialization fell prey to lack of time. We hope to improve on it post-jam though!

Is this the only place you can build a mine?

I'm not sure what to do after building one, because the snake eats it quickly.

Submitted(+1)

Good bones, and fun art.  I don't know how reptile scales completely escaped my brainstorming.

Submitted(+2)

Love the concept and art style! And the vibe is very solid. The web version works, but could not get anything done after I put down the first mine. But I can see the potential of Civ style placement mechanics in there.

Developer

Thank you so much!!
Mines need workers to produce the keratin you need to build more buildings - so you need to place a mine and a dwelling nearby, and you'll see workers starting to head from their home to the mine, and then slowly tick your keratin count up!
Our apologies, as always in jams tutorialization was rushed very last minute :')

The graphics look amazing but unfortunately I couldn't launch the game, the new game button crashed the game several times.

Developer

Yeah, unfortunately something went wrong with the very last Windows build we uploaded, and that's the one that locked in for submission ;_; Thank you so much for your nice words! If you'd like to play the game, you can find the working web version here:  https://julienbarbe.com/Projets/Jeux/Ouropolis/Ouropolis.html
