Submissions pre-deadline and updates.

First GameJam here, question about submissions.  If you submit a game, before the deadline,  then make an update to the game, once again before the deadline can you update the submission? or resubmit? or is it a one and done thing?

Also,  is there a preferred format for submission? I'm assuming Windows.  Will the fact that using a self-certification causes a security error in windows be a problem?

Thanks in advance.

If you submit the game and then make update, you can simply update your submission. From what I know you can even update it during the voting phase.
Of course even after the jam is over you can continue t create updates to your game.

As for preferred format.. I would say windows or in-browser. Most of the people here use windows (I think) so it will work with most of the "voters" and if you want as many people to check your game then create built for browser. It's easier to check it if you can play in browser instead of downloading it.

Believe me, there will be a lot (and I mean A LOT) of games to play.

Thanks for the info, I'm using Godot, I know how to do Windows, Linux and Android.

I haven't done anything web yet and no idea how to do that on itch.  Not sure at this point if I would have the time, but I will keep it in mind for next time.   I guess for this one Windows and Linux versions will have to do.

Cheers!

Seems like Godot + itch is really web friendly, I already turned an older game from a DL only to HTML, thanks again for the advise.

Just to back up Mario on there being a lot of games to play, I just checked and last year there were 1,070 submissions!

The basic idea is once voting begins, you don't want to change it up so people at the start of the voting process are playing/voting on the same game as people at the end. Bug fixes are 100% allowed (and encouraged) but no features should be added once voting begins. BEFORE voting begins, you can update it however you please as far as I'm aware. "Submitting" really just links to the game's page, not the exact version you submitted.

As for the format, web-browser is preferred if feasible since people won't need to download anything and can just play it right away. If not, then Windows is likely the best bet. Linux folks will just run it via Wine or something similar, and no one cares about Mac users (kidding! ;p ). Godot thankfully makes exporting to multiple formats easy so nothing says you can't export Windows, Linux, and Mac and have all 3 versions on your game's page.
