Absolutely loved the visuals in this game. The animations were really nice and the way that the intro swooped in with the platformer on the in game computer screen was super cool. I also appreciate the view change button though because it was a bit harder to see with the 3D view.

I had a bug (or maybe just a me not understanding things problem) where I would be trying to shoot down the enemies but the bullets just wouldn't come. Maybe there's a cool-down there that I wasn't aware of?

My only other criticism would be I had some wonky collision issues, but I also made a platformer in Unity and my game had the exact same issue, so I'm starting to think it's just a general Unity problem.

Overall though I loved this! Great job!

thanks for playing, I’m happy you enjoyed it. The firing mechanism has a 0.8-sec cooldown to avoid bullet spamming.

yes the collision was a little wonky after build ,but seemed to run fine in unity editor. seems like its a bug in unity’s rigidbody

Visually this is really nice. I love the glows you used on certain assets. Really fits with the old style PC monitor. The character and enemies looks great too. The exploding enemy characters was a nice touch too.

A couple of issues: I use a MacBook Pro as my main computer, and use the trackpad instead of a mouse so I found shooting awkward, it kind of needs a key mapped for shooting so that you can play with just the keyboard.

The other issue is that I got to a part of the level where I was at the edge of a ledge and I'd have to take a leap of faith because it's not clear on where I can safely jump to (screenshot attached). Platformers aren't games I would normally play, but I feel you should have an idea on where you can jump to, without taking that leap of faith, especially when dieing in this game sends you right back to the beginning.

Developer

Sorry about that,I have never used a MacBook before so I wasn’t aware of the trackpad.adding a key mapped for shooting is a great idea,i will consider adding it in future games.

I’m also really sorry about the camera issue,I tried fixing it multiple times and just couldn’t get it to work properly since i was using multiple cameras for the pc,pc screen and for full view.Getting them all to move in sync was a major issue, making them glitch out.I couldn’t get it to work before the time limit and so I submitted it like that.

Sorry again,And thanks for playing

As rugeboy said, checkpoints would be very welcome. I got stuck on the falling # part and had to start from the beggining..

I found it very clever how the shot was an * and became "v" to show destruction, and how the enemies crumbled when dying! The visual glow was nice to differentiate ascii objects from the background.

Speaking of background, the whole PC intro was not necessary and kinda broke the rules (I doubt it was created only with ASCII characters), and the platforms also seemed not made from text. You showed talent and I'm sure you could come up with a clever way to make a platform with ascii...

Good submission, but the use of non-ascii assets hold the game back (for this jam, of course). If these parts were indeed made of text characters, please let me know!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback. The pc was added to illustrate old computers that used DOS and how the interface was since that is where i got the idea from,I thought adding the pc wouldn’t break the rule since it was more of a background element and wasn’t part of the main game,Guess i was wrong. This is my first attempted game jam so I’m not really familiar with theme’s and rules.

The platform was made using underscore characters that were stretched and rotated to look like a platform,I guess it really wasn’t noticeable since the entire platform was the same color.

Thanks for playing

Nice to know that the platforms were made with ascii! the "hapax" submission also have some nice elements drawn with letters that almost disappear on the big picture. They found a way to show this, making the level build itself at the beginning, but your way is also valid!

On the PC at the beginning, I'm not the organizer to enforce rules, so I don't know how they will deal with it. Maybe they agree with you that it is only illustrative and doesn't impact the gameplay :)

I really liked the effects when you kill enemies and they just fall apart, reminds me of Lego games. I wish you put in checkpoints cause it was really annoying to mess up one jump, land on one spike, and start all the way over. I also think the spikes should have just been one damage and not instadeath, maybe you didn't want players cheesing past certain parts, but if you were going to make them instadeath, you should have added checkpoints so it's not as punishing. But overall it was fun to play, just with that tiny little annoyance.

Developer

Thanks for playing. I was originally planning on adding checkpoints but later thought being able to start from where the character died will make the game to quick and boring since the level was very short.Guess i was wrong 😑,sorry about that
