In what way does your game fit the theme?
NOTE: THIS GAME DID NOT UPLOAD CORRECTLY. A WORKING COPY CAN BE FOUND HERE: https://vanburace.itch.io/robo-battle-buddies, HOWEVER, IT IS UNFORTUNATELY NOT ELIGIBLE FOR RATING FOR THE JAM

A group of robots who all failed to secure their homeland's protection must work together and provide unique skills that allow them to overcome their oppressor.

Did you write all the code yourself and made all the assets from scratch?
Yes, everything but the sprite textures of the floor and background are made by me. Floor tiles and backgrounds from Google images under free to use and distribute.

Nice game. Art and storyline is very nice :)

If you can, please check out my game too https://itch.io/jam/brackeys-5/rate/925101

Developer

Thank you, I'm glad you liked it :)

Oh no :(

Developer

Yeah, I didn't understand that I needed a zipped file in order for the game to  be playable. I am bummed to not be in the jam voting because of it, but I took the time to iron out most of the bugs and reuploaded it here: RoboBattleBuddies by VanBurace (itch.io). If you want to still check it out for the sake of it even though its not part of the jam anymore, I hope you like it :)

I just did that and it really is a shame! Bosses are something I have never done myself. Are you using state machines for that?

But no worries, I think the whole who-can-spam-his-game-the-most contest is a bit of a joke anyway. I for myself will just focus on developing my game further and will just be happy if anyone stumbles across it. :)

Developer

I am using state machines for the boss AI, yes, and a new scene loads between levels.

I was pretty disappointed to find out that it seems like people just farm ratings by spamming their game everywhere, and I'm really not someone who is on social media much at all, so that really doesn't work for me, so maybe its not that big of a deal that Im not really in the voting. Im just glad I walked out with a finished product, and like you said, if someone happens to find it and likes it, that's good enough.

Hey it really sucks that I couldn't play your game. It sounds really cool.

Would you be so kind as to have a look at my game too? https://itch.io/jam/brackeys-5/rate/92501

Developer(+1)

That is a cool concept you have there! I am a touch tone deaf so it seemed pretty daunting at first, but I lined up the 5 different colors in order to get a side by side comparison and was able to figure it out :)

And while it is no longer eligible for the game jam rating, I manage to upload mine correctly here: RoboBattleBuddies by VanBurace (itch.io)

I played your game on the new link and I really loved it. Thanks so much for playing jam out despite being a bit tone-deaf.

Developer(+1)

I'm glad you liked it!

As Wietske said the game unfortunately is missing some files to work properly! If you don't know how you can do it, Brackeys made a video to explain it, like for everything else! XD

Developer

Thanks for the info! I took the time to iron out some bugs and got a decent amount of them (getting hit sometimes temporarily breaks walking animations, but it will sort itself out when you throw and attack) and I re-uploaded the game here if you want to check it out just for fun: RoboBattleBuddies by VanBurace (itch.io)

Hey awesome, now it works well! Though I can't beat the boss. How do you avoid the "tongue & green screen" attack of the boss?

Developer

Ahh, I was afraid that part might not be as obvious. So the gem on the tongue has a damage check, so you need to do damage to it equal to 3 heavy attacks before the screen gets too green to avoid the attack, and the boss will take a big burst of damage on your next hit. If you want to return to this game and try to beat it , the next bosses each have mechanics that require you to respond correctly or you will die. The correct actions for those are as follows: the second boss has a red laser that does damage per frame, so it will almost certainly kill you, and you use the wall ability you get from boss 1 to block it, and the last boss has a force field that pops up and has a similar mechanic to the green gem, but you need to use the laser ability from boss 2 on the force field to stop the attack and put the boss into damage phase.

Boss beaten! Thanks for the explanation! It is a nice game! Frustrating at times ahah, but enjoiable overall!

Developer

Good job :) I appreciate you giving it a second go, and Im glad you found it enjoyable in spite of the frustration!

The game is missing some files. Better to upload not just the .exe but zip all the files that are made during the build. So unfortunately, can't play the game :/

Developer(+1)

Yeah, I was in a huge rush to try to upload and had never uploaded a game before, so I didn't realize all the files didn't get wrapped into one. I did manage to get it all together and uploaded it here : RoboBattleBuddies by VanBurace (itch.io). Its unfortunately not eligible for the jam anymore, but I at least had time to polish it a bit more.

Submitted

Ah good! Yeah uploading before a deadline is always stressful especially the first time around. Might take a look anyway, cause I was curious about the game :)

Developer(+1)

Yeah, but at least now I know what I'm doing for the future, so I know to factor in compiling the build and testing the build as well. If you do check it out,  I hope you like it :)
