Track description | Creative process
For this submission, I had a few ideas in mind that I wanted to implement from the beginning:
I aimed to create a loop featuring an "Echo" motif followed by a funky continuation, which would highlight the cavernous characteristics of the music in the original soundtrack. The pattern was primarily composed in a major key, incorporating a bII chord. Although I considered using chords outside the key, like the Petrushka chord, I decided that the bII chord was the best option. It's already more common in Nintendo games and adds a certain jazzy groove to the piece.
Given that the original piece has a 10-second loop, I decided to introduce variations to the loop I composed, keeping in mind how the music would adapt to different in-game situations. For example, I used drums to signal dangerous situations or added a sound effect for when the level timer is running low, followed by a sped-up version of the piece. I also included the sound effect that plays when you finish the level. The placement of these sound effects mirrors how they would play in the game, essentially occurring abruptly. These decisions were made with the intention of using these sounds in an FMOD project, allowing for later implementation in another game project in Unity.
Finally, most of the sounds were created from scratch to give the piece a true 8-bit feel. Some sounds required a low-pass filter to reduce the amount of high frequencies.

I enjoyed the track and the tempo changes. Maybe it needs abit of work in the mix to bring the drums more in the foreground. Cool 3d animation!
The rhythm emulates the original track in a good way. The speed up towards the end was a great touch. Nice work!
Thank youu
Nice upbeat, but mysterious vibe! Great job!
I like the idea of the loop adapting to the player's actions, and you did very well with that. Got a good underground and shaddy feeling to it, nice take on the theme !
thankss
I think the drums lacks a bit of punch. Also would have liked the piece to stand more on the foreground,to be more melodic and catchy, I dont really know why but I expect 2d platformers to have a soundtrack you can listen on its own more than puzzle games or fps for example.
I really like the mix betwen the old sounds and the new pad base. Good job!
I’m glad you liked the pad :)
I think the loop part and how it gets crazy in the end are really good, but I'm not totally sold on the pads, I think they clash a bit too much with the 8-bit instrumentation, maybe they are too distant in the mix? But that's my only caveat!
Thanks for the feedback :))
I love the idea of creating a short loop that you play variations of, really fits the OST where each level had relatively short loops. I could see this being in a 16-bit remake or in an alternate world where SMB was made near the end of the NES life where they had more hardware to make more complex soundtracks.
I also really vibe with the jazzy feeling you described, it fits the underground level really well.
I think the pads in the background could benefit from either being swapped with another 8-bit sound, or an increased attack. Because of the other sounds having such high attack, the pad sometimes sounds like it’s off-beat in a distracting way. The low-pass filter might also be too strong, I think some of the sounds could benefit from some higher frequencies to give them more impact that drives the music forward.
Overall really nice sounding piece, well done!
thankss. I appreciate the feedback!
really solid track!!
I love the vibes of this, my only real complaint being that I think the pads in the back sounds a bit out of place with the rest of the 8 bit instrumentation you had going (this probably could have felt more cohesive if you just changed it to a base triangle/sine wave). But I liked it! I love how you developed that main theme and made it interesting despite just being a relatively small section to repeat over and over, and the custom time running low and ending theme was an excellent touch. Good work!
Thankss. Yeah the pad is a bit out of place maybe next time I´ll do something similar like you told me :)
Interesting take, like the mix between some classic 8bit bassy sound and at the same time a pretty calm ambient pad in the background. Nice touch on the acceleration at the end to mimic the same Mario Bros effect. (And yes Youtube link needs to be changed, was listening to your mp3)
