Wanderhome has been one of those games that truly opened my eyes to the kind of things a game can do as far as inspiring a narrative with its rules, bringing a group of players together, and pushing them to explore emotionally-driven storytelling within the space of the pastoral world it presents.
This was my first experience with the Belonging Outside Belonging (or No Dice No Masters) System, and though it appears at first blush to provide very few rules to work with, the truth is that it provides exactly the amount of rules that it needs, and these rules provided serve all the better to bring the players' focus squarely on roleplaying, worldbuilding, and storytelling as the game progresses.
The storytelling, and facilitation of storytelling, truly takes center stage in this system, and I didn't realize just how much until I had sat down with one other player with no plan whatsoever on the characters we were going to make. Purely by picking a couple playbooks we liked and answering the prompts provided, we spent the next almost forty-five minutes constructing a narrative around these two characters and their history together, shepherded into the creative headspace purely by what the book prompted us with. By the time we were done with character creation, we were left with a pair of fully-fledged, developed characters with their own quirks, histories, and personal dynamic with one another.
Wanderhome is all about the storytelling; emotional, character-driven storytelling in a world that the players share in the creation of. The book provides only enough vague hints at lore to get your mind wondering, and lets you and your players fill in the rest.
If anything I've, any of the other reviewers here, or the itch page itself said sounds even remotely interesting, then buy Wanderhome. Give it a read. Even if you don't think you quite understand it, I'm sure you have a pretty good idea of what to expect, and once it really clicks for you what Wanderhome is all about, I know it'll find a special place to nestle in your heart the way it did me. At the very least, I can guarantee you won't regret it.
