Sam I Am 73 rated 2400 BC: Ancient Apocalypse

Sam I Am 73 rated a 24XX hack 4 years ago
A downloadable 24XX hack.

Great stuff here! I'm someone who was forced to read the Iliad, the Odyssey, and even the Aeneid in high school. Despite this experience, or perhaps because of it, I love games that center on the ancient world. I've always found it strange that D&D incorporates Bronze Age myths like gorgons and minotaurs, yet focuses on a largely medieval European milieu. I also love games that encourage the GM to share the load of worldbuilding and NPC governance, and 2400 BC's community mechanics are excellent in that regard. It's refreshing to give the players a different goal than "kill the monster and take its stuff." It's also a wise decision, since 24XX games don't generally dwell on tactical combat and lengthy encounters. And the decision to make this a post-apocalyptic game is also brilliant, in my opinion. I'm excited to see players take roles reminiscent of Apocalypse World's Hocus, Hardholder, and Chopper. I feel that too many games focus exclusively on conquest. The only feature of this game that I'm not 100% in love with is the inclusion of supernatural foes (cruel immortal, stone ones) in the Threats table. I just prefer a more materialistic game, and feel that this inclusion slightly detracts from the resource-driven community struggles that I love. Of course, the 24XX ethos includes a fondness for hacking, and I know I'm free to tweak this feature. I just felt that I might make note of my opinion. This is still an excellent title, well deserving of 5 stars. I hope to bring it to my table soon!
