The only powerful attack (jump + attack) seems to be limited yet there's nothing on screen to signify when you don't have it, otherwise you'll just be Left/Right + Jumping into enemies for an eternity. Can just vertically walk through the metal container and over the hole in the ground enemies spawn out of.
