KeronCyst rated The World Begins With You

KeronCyst rated a game 5 years ago
A downloadable game for Windows and macOS.
  • The camera tries to be cinematic but it hurts more than helps, especially with the opening corridors (that twist at intersections is just nasty) and with the side-view positions, in which it's not clear when you should simply head straight to the right versus moving slightly diagonally or not, leading to pointless deaths that feel unfair.
  • There is a massive lack of sound effects. Yes, I know the camera is sometimes far from the player, but it's not that far. There seems to be no jump sound, no landing sound, no sound when the grating drops in the intro cutscene, no sound when reading anything, no death sound, etc.
  • Your character can't jump as soon as s/he lands on the ground (there appears to be a slight delay), which is frustrating as it prevents quick platforming.
  • There is no indicator of whether sprint is in effect other than a very slight boost which is basically imperceptible after you jump; should you tap Shift again after landing from a sprinted jump/fall or not? The world may never know…

The game looks all right in its low-poly aesthetic but the camera really makes it feel like it tries too hard and the lack of audio makes this effort bland. This one is a let's-watch rather than a play for me.
